In my humble view, to begin with, basics in project management are important. We have learned the cycle of project implementation and noted how key the M&E is considered: at the center of all steps. Then come Knowledge of statistical analysis and various programs used for data analysis.
Statistical analysis is the least pleasant part at the moment, but I fully agree.
@lilia_maximova Totally agree with you.

Dear Colleagues,
In addition to all that has been mentioned, a very crucial skill to being a successful M and E professional is attention to details. Whether in data analysis or interpretation. We must pay close attention to details and be able to point out errors or anything out of place. Cheers. Tolulope

I think that the basic foundation of skills one should have as a beginner in this field are analytical and logical skills, data analysis , reasearch skills hich both includes qualitative and quantitative data.
@GeofreyDaniel said in What skills are essential for a M&E professional?:
Kobo toolbox,Odk
I think that the most important skills for an M&E professional would be Research skills. This is the start point as it helps determine the extent of your knowledge on subject or field in which the monitoring process is been applied. With extensive knowledge on the field you are evaluating, you would be able to determine what can be monitored and how the approach will be as well as the monitoring methodologies that failed in the past.
Another would be data analysis. Since you are going to be showing changes/ results and proving same with evidence, you would need to be avast with forms of data collection and analysis as that will help in your result harvesting. Project data that is effectively used can show project impact at a glance.
Communication is also a key aspect of successful monitoring processes. The ability to produce reports that highlight project results and outcomes is indispensable for M&E professionals. Good communication ability determines the nature of results and success of endline evaluations, which in turn is a huge determinant of project continuity.
The basic skills one requires to have for effective monitoring and evaluation stems from the willingness to work in research-driven activities. Then comes the skill that includes communication skill, detailed oriented, analytic, and data collection and processing. Further, we need to have a knowledge on how to use benchmark information for comparing the project outcomes.
On top of that, one should have the knowledge of M&E frameworks like logical framework, team mobilisation, report writing which will help to track the project, suggest corrective actions and document success stories.
Data Analysis, Critical Thinking and Qualitative Research skills are essential for M&E Professionals
I think that M&E all depends on data available in the field and deep practical and academic knowledge in the field of operation. one also needs academic and professional qualification in M&E. I think we need an online MSc M&E on this same platform.

Mark, my other colleagues have very beautifully shared the nitty-gritty of M&E. I would like to add here the most important skill in M&E is Communication which is really essential tool in the field when you have to cross-checkor back-check the data available. You interact with people, win their confidence, build a trust level and I have practically exercised it, it really pays.

Hello room, am actually working on a data which has plenty of duplication, seeking need assistance from guys in this room who knows how to extract duplicates from a large number of data on excel sheet. some one said i should use CONCATENATE TOOL... having difficult to do that
M&E is essential in every organization so the skills mentioned by others are very important but one can look into Arc GIS for the monitoring aspect because it is becoming the main thing for statisticians to study GIS as it helps in data collection. But don't forget ability to make inference and communication skill too.
The essential skills for M&E professional are Analytical skills, communication skills, good organizational skills and computer application skills.
I Concur with BUJO. The essential skills are analytical and communication skills. there are other secondary ones though.
According to my opinion, the essentiels skills for a M&E professional are: how to collect project data that is monitoring and how to analyse and interpret different collected data with will help to come out with conclusions about the project evolution.
Overall he/she has to understand the project on which he/she want to monitor and evaluate.
Hi I am a public health professional. I want to learn about fundraising details so I join with you guys.

Skills for M&E is vast, however the basic knowledge in my view is your appreciation of data mining and its management. You may need to have a grasp over excel which is one of the commonly used data filtering software. Your understanding of social issues and the objective of the study you are undertaking will lead to the type of deduction will you make from the data gathered.
This standpoint is solid.
M&E professional must have a conceptual clarity on the project, its objectives and its mandate. Irrespective of the other skills, understanding about the project and its parameters is absolutely essential and hence one should be able to have exceptional analytical skills, besides as is being said data management skills, which in my view is secondary. Unless a M& E professional is able to understand the parameters of the project in addition to the mandate M&E wont be successful.
As an M and E specialist, you need to be able to conduct a study/survey, design the method, collected relevant data, analyze the data and create simple report which the government or your consumer or donor will be able to understand.
thank you.

You should take into accout different methods used to collect data, this depending on the design and objectives of the project. I should recommend you first to familiarize with key concepts of M&E: theory of change, Outcomes, outputs, Impact, indicators, beneficiaries etc.
I am trying to get insight into M & E, How can we differentiate between M & E and Research Methodology?
In my opinion, an M&E professional ought to have the ability to collect and analyze data in order to provide information that can be used in program planning and project management. This information can also be used to inform or influence policy.
M&E specialist is to be able to collect relevant information regularly and analyze and measure the performance.
Monitoring and evaluation skill to my own understanding is collecting the data, analyzing it, what trends or patterns , outliers involved at that point you can draw you observations (evaluation)
@lmakunja said in What skills are essential for a M&E professional?:
I also suggest that the skills essential for a M & E professional may also include how to design an evaluation study and choosing the evaluation strategy that will guide you in your evaluation exercise.
Absolutely right mate @lmakunja

An outlier is an observation that lies an abnormal distance from other values in a random sample from a population. An outlier is very visible and concise on a plotted graph of your data

According to my understanding about difference between M&E and research methodology.
