@sharoog, thanks for the response.
As a WBS has been called a simple and powerful tool for project management, wouldn't it be worthwhile to learn to build it well?
@Facilitator ,of course its important for any project manager to learn how to draft a proper, logical WBS.
For every project my organization carries out, we have project managers that handle them. When it is time to discuss scope, duration and budget, board meetings are held and decisions are made. The board is made up of the members of the organization and decisions are made jointly. The project managers, who are also part of the board report to the board on progress of the projects.
Thanks for the update @Suoghene.
In our organization project manager generally discuss the major points with client and submit the progress of project on daily basis. He also inform the status of project and major road blocks with directors and partner of our organization.
This is clear
@vikasbhardwj ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
Is the administrative council the project governance in your organisation?
In our organization ,the project managers is reporting to the program managers and then the program manager will review every work that have done by project manager and his team and send it to the Executive director.
@rial ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
In my organization, the project manager reports to the Country Director.
The Project manager is responsible for making all project related decisions provided this does not change the cost, scope or timeline for the project. The project director is responsible for engaging with the funder before major decisions like changes to the scope, cost or timeline for the project are made.
The Country Director reports to the Senior Vice president responsible for Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African country.
There board of Directors are responsible for taking decision about the project at global level. The decisions of the board of Directors is conveyed through the office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
I always thought that project managers are in control of all the decision making of the project. Module 1 taught me that project governance makes the decisions and authorisations. Managing projects is a lot bigger than I thought as a lot of stakeholder involve. Clearly defining the scope, what the budget is, and schedule all play a vital role to manage the project successfully. I am looking forward to learning more in the following weeks.
@Quest4knowledge ,I am glad that you see value in how this course has greatly impacted you.
@Tibeme ,thanks for expressing your organization's project governance structure.
Thanks for sharing for organizations project governace structure.
In my organization, the Project Manager reports to the Director. The Project Manager cannot change anything on the budget but he must inform the Director about any possible activity that should be changed, then the Director addresses the issue.
@TatuliAmos, thank you for updating us on your organization's governance structure.
As I work in the Academia, it does not have Corporate Style Governance structure , however we do follow classical hierarchal structure where faculty members report to the Head of Department who in turn report to the the Dean and he is the person who make most of the decision about the academic project.
How risk are dealt in your project, who make decision in that regard?
@rkhanal ,thanks for expressing your point of view on project governance.
Hello guys, @rkhanal has posted and wants to know how;
+Project risks are dealt with in your various organizational contexts.
+The person/people that make the decisions in cases where project risks actually happen. We look forward to your responses.
Project governance is an “oversight function that is aligned with the organization's governance model and encompasses the project life cycle.
Governance in project management gives a structure to the whole process. It ensures that the project is aligned with business goals; and the right project is undertaken at the right time. During the lifetime of the project, good governance safeguards that the project stays on target, reducing the risk of failure.
Project managers (PMs) are responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the completion of specific projects for an organization while ensuring these projects are on time, on budget, and within scope.
Project managers play the lead role in planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing projects. They are accountable for the entire project scope, project team, resources, and the success or failure of the project.
@chuoljohn ,wow. This is brilliant. Thanks for expressing your point of view on project governance.
In our organization, the project manager reports to the Executive director who reports to the Board of directors. Our project manager design the programs, engage with stakeholders, establish the budge
In my organization, the project manager reports to the Director of the organization. The project manager is allowed to manage the project team, manage the schedule and somehow is allowed to make decisions about the scope. However, he is not allowed to take any decision related to the budget.

A work breakdown structure (WBS) is a visual, hierarchical outline to guide your project. By first breaking down the deliverables, you can then create tasks, which can again be broken down into subtasks as many times as needed to address the goals of the project.
This process takes large, complex projects and breaks them into more manageable chunks to make it easier to plan, schedule and deliver. The WBS helps with scope, cost and schedule baselines and ensures that your project plan takes all these important factors into account.
By visualizing your project in this manner, you and your resources can collaborate on defining mission critical tasks, their subtasks and the inter-dependencies between them.
Thanks for this great contribution. Can you share with us some tips on how to elaborate the WBS in an effective way? Maybe based on example
Hello team,
In our organization, it's the director who is the head. The project manager has duties to ensure that the project runs effectively and decides when changes has to be made concerning the budget estimates, the schedule of various projects and also the scope of the project. The project manager liaise with the director whenever the changes have to be made.Thanks.

FIRST OF ALL, WHATEVER THE C.E.O AUTHORISES SHOULD BE RESPECTED. IF YOU HAVE ANY CHANGES ON YOUR PROJECT SCOPE PLEASE FIND YOUR PROJECT MANAGER AND OUTLINE ALL THE CHANGES TO HIM. IN TURN HE WILL ADRESS THE C.E.O OF THE CHANGES AND I BELIEVE IT WILL BE PLACED ON CONSIDERATION.

@Daniel_habari ,I totally agree with you...
In my organisation, the Project Manager normally reports any necessity of change in scope, budget or deadline to the director. Donors and other StakeHolders don't really take part in the process but the director inform them about any change.
Thanks for the update @woodly96.
In our projects, the project manager reports both to the Contract Fulfillment Responsible. This is usually a senior project manager that reports dotted line to the Key Account Manager.
Is unusual for a Project Manager to report to two different managers?
@kessytonukari ,there's nothing unusual about it because organizations are run differently. Thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure with us.
At my project the CEO of the company also serves as the project direction and controls majority of the decisions on the project. The Senior project manager reports to her weekly and as the need arises. This company does not have a board and the governance is with the CEO and COO.
@YKels ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure with us.
Hello @YKels ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure with us.
Project governance provides direction and defines decision-making procedures and metrics for validating impacts to the project. It also enables the project team to deliver on requirements and creates a forum for issue resolution to occur in a timely manner. It provides a single point of accountability. This mandates clarity and fosters consistency of decision making for the life cycle of the project (Townsend, 2014).
In addition, project governance defines and clearly articulates structured roles, responsibilities and accountabilities within the project, which also facilitates decision making. This is critical when the project manager has a deviation in scope, budget, time, resources, or quality, or when a risk has presented itself. Project governance defines whom these issues impact and how to deal with the impact.
With all these in mind, setting up a project governance structure is key to ensuring that the project would be implemented in a way that the goals would be met and necessary change made in the area of focus of the project.
I agree with you Daniel
Responsibility and accountability at each level is key
@Blessing89 ,your insight on project governance is brilliant.Thank for expressing your insightful point of view on this topic.
Good day everyone, talking about project governance in my organization, the project manager is saddled with the responsibility of developing and executing projects. The Project manager often get clearance from the board of directors first in executing any project at hand.
@Balalokrit, thank you for updating us on the governance structure of your organization.
In my organization project manager plus project board and governance board are responsible for any changes in the projects.
@i_hayat_ahmadzai ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
In my organization, the project manager also known as the research associate takes control of work schedule and assignment guided by the organization's principles. He therefore control the activities of the project and report to the projects head, donors, and the organizational head. In decisions relating to budget, time and deliverables, he can only change in conjunction with the people he report to. Regular reporting intervals depends on the team and the demand of the project. Some requires weekly whereas others can be as short as daily, mostly depending on the stage of the project.
@Darkez ,you've clearly summarized your organization's project governance structure.Thank you for sharing this info with us.
Can you shed more light on the titles of your board members please?
well organized, I am really satisfied with the format.
In our organization the project governance board is made up of the country director, the deputy country director and the research managers. They meet up when need be and deliberate on what changes need to be effected on the project charter. However, it is the country director who has the final say on what needs to be done moving forward.
@michaelmaundu ,you've clearly explained your organization's project governance structure. What role does the project manager play in your organization?
The project manager is involved in preparing the project charter and all the planning documents with the help of other departmental managers. He/she then presents them to the project governance board who then goes through them making the necessary amendments. The country director then gives a go ahead by signing them.
The project manager has to be on the same page with the project governance.
The Governance gives permission to the project manager in most cases.
@michaelmaundu ,thank you for sharing this information with us.
@Danlive6,thanks for expressing your point of view on project governance.
Your submission has provided insight to include in my project, thank you
In my organisation the project manager reports to the CEO, who also reports to the board of directors. However, the project manager is given a considerable authority to make project decision. Major decisions are referred to the CEO.
So does that mean the board of directors do not really have a say as regards the major decisions taken by the CEO?
@EWURAMA ,thanks for clearly expressing your organization's project governance structure.
My project manger is the one who directly report to the representative country director. She sometimes raise up questions brought by her subordinates who experienced with some challenges regarding project activities, and expenses. Often time, she could directly respond to the team without referring to director, excepted some particularly things, for example less spending or over spending, this is required her to discuss with the director for approval.
What are the major decisions that are required to be referred to the CEO?
We are a very small organisation and the Operations General Manager is tasked with all the project management duties and reports directly to the CEO. All decisions are made by both parties.
@EleletaSurafel said in Module 1 Discussion: Project Governance:
At my organization, the project manager reports directly to the CEO, who independently makes up the entirety of the project governance body, since it’s a small organization. While this hierarchical structure has been put in place, no clear cut job descriptions and limits are there such as which of the three constraints the project manager is allowed to modify, if any, or how often updates are needed.
Any one here who works in a small non-profit such as mine, please share how you have found it best to work around these situations.
The same happens in my org
in my organization project manager report to general director. the project manager has authority to change schedules, tasks and cost that can incur up to 10% increment especially in area of construction. if it incur more than 10% the general director should decide.
the project manager prepare progress report every month and present to the general director
@Raksmey_Bo ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
@Raksmey_Bo ,the role of a CEO is to oversee the daily operations of an organization.A CEO may be an employee,a company director, founder or even owner. For example,in case a major financial decision needs to be made, the CEO will surely have to be consulted.
@Shushenka ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.

In my organization, the project manager reports directly to program coordinator. She fully managed three constraints by herself.
In my organization the project manager reports directly to programme's manager.
At our organization, there are various stipulated roles specifically for each office. This is important to avoid duplication of roles or usurping of work to be executed. The Project manager reports to the Director and the Project Manager manages the various projects, analyses data and produces reports for all the stakeholders to understand the project progress.
@Sarah_1 ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure. What other roles does the project manager play in your organization?

@mam_celia, thank you for updating us on the duties of your project manager.
at my organization, the Project manager reports to the country director via Programs manager
In our projects, the project manager reports to the group people including the chairmen of the entire organization. But they don’t know exactly about the project. The project manager can change schedules and tasks but he need to get the permission from them to change any budgets, deadlines or requirements.
Project Governance from what i understand, it constituted the people who have a higher authority over a project manager. The give the guide lines upon which a project manager manges.
@rhud ,thanks for expressing your point of view on project governance.
