What is one M&E role, task or process that you would like to learn more about? In the discussion forum, describe one part of your data flow that you would like to learn more about.
Sample Post: I would like to learn more about…[data storage, evaluation, data quality assessment, etc.]
I would like to learn more about and know the distinction/difference between data evaluation and analysis and data quality assessment - and when they are necessary (or not).
In my project example introduced in this certificate program, I am concerned not about quantitative data, rather I am concerned about understanding the veracity of information based on the sources' interest to participate in the project. It is planned that qualitative data will be collected through interviews and surveys or focus groups.
Specifically, I am concerned about understanding the interest or drive behind a parents authorization to allow their child to attend the learning center during their free time. Is it merely a convenience to have the children basically attend a free "day-care" while the parent is out working or looking for work? Similarly, is the child's interest to attend the learning center entirely based on the parents decision to not have them left unsupervised at home? Is the child interested because of the potential to learn new computer skills or English; or are they merely attending because the parents and the child are aware that the child will receive one free meal at the learning center? Remember that in this project, the key participants are families and children from the poorest neighborhoods.

I would like to learn more about how to ensure the safety of data without expensive applications.
I agree, keeping the data confidential is important so knowing affordable places to store the data would be beneficial. Maybe it can be stored in pen drives or an external memory and these be kept under lock and key with only certain members to have access to it. It can be a viable option if not that many funds are available. However, this works for digital data, if there are paper surveys, I think the best way would be to scan them and make then digital then dispose of the paper in order not to leave a trail and maintain confidentiality.
Hello SRALE and RCPparticipant,
Thank you for this valuable tip. I have worked on projects where the concern for safety of data storage is not entirely based on the fact that data contains personal/individual information. Rather, the concern for a secure/safe data storage was for security of the individual participant(s) in countries under a closed political environment. Concerned government agencies could easily "eavesdrop" or hack-into project records. However, if the paper trail is minimized through use of digital files stored on flash/pen drives or external memory that can be kept under lock-and-key worked best. Thanks again for reminding me of this very critical tip. Hugh C. Orozco (21 June 2019)

Please did you find this course useful for your work? please do well to share with us
Hello "@michaelndolom",
When writing achievement reports, I always make use of relevant supporting data. I have found it useful to think of the intended audience, the data source, and not lose sight of the impact or objective. In order to make any evidence-based inferences or determinations or statement of fact, I have to conduct not only data quality audits from time-to-time, but also analysis of any trends as revealed by consistent quantitative data over a period of time, and/or any behavior change that is captured through qualitative data from interviews, surveys or observation. Thus, instead of providing an achievements report, which states that a target has been reached, I am also able to provide commentary on positive trends or behavior change (or not) that help keep the activity on course to meeting the objective. Thanks, Hugh C. Orozco (21 June 2019)

I make bold to state clearly that the resources available for M&E on this platform are good enough for us to learn from. However, for learners who are desirous of learning some specific areas of M&E more than what has been offered on this platform, I suggest that you make use of the internet to avail yourselves of more knowledge. You will discover that in the course of our lectures, some links are given for us to get more of M&E resources from. Click on the links and you will be taken to sites with more information. However, if after exhausting the use of all the links and you are still unsatisfied, please don't be afraid to use the general internet to seek information. One role I would like to learn more about is the project management position in my project. This is a key role in the data flowchart I have created and the major gateway between operations and the organization directors and external stakeholders. With the many moving parts in operations starting from the data collection step, there will be an enormous responsibility for reporting personnel and a huge volume of information to monitor and evaluate. I am curious to know if it is best to have a team for this or to have one central person (I'm sure this depends on the size and scope of the organization). One potential answer to this challenge is to have junior project managers at the building levels who also assume some of the M&E so that some of the labor and analysis as in place prior to it reaching this project manager role. Would love to hear thoughts from the group!

Hi Olorunfemi,
Your comment is very important! With so much 'open source' software available these days you might find tools that are free of charge. For example, Microsoft Project is emulated by several open source (and free!!) software programs. They might not be exactly like Microsoft Project, and there may be 'bugs' but they can often do the job and eliminate financial worries at least in terms of the digital aspects of your organization. Do check out products that might work for you that are designed and run by the generous world community of open software organizations. (I use Project Libre (https://www.projectlibre.com/) instead of Microsoft Project and it works just dandy!)
Cheers, and in philanthropy!

Hi Faith,
Data analysis is supremely important in M&E I would guess, so your wish to learn more about it is well-founded! Data analysis falls under quantitative and qualitative research, and if you have not yet taken a basic course on these subjects I would highly recommend doing so. Just learning some of the key aspects of statistics can help you to understand your quantitative data, such as descriptions of the data, central tendency and frequency, data dispersion, and even inferential methods where you may begin to generalize your data samples against larger populations! There are excellent resources out there with step-by-step examples and work flows. There are free statistical processing and analysis packages (I Use the program, R - see https://www.r-project.org/. It's FREE and don't be daunted by its massive scope - there are abundant tutorials to teach yourself whatever you need. Give it a try! For qualitative research, there are also plenty of resources online. I highly recommend the books:
