  • i think you should create an M&E plan because it is the most effective method to prove to the bank that you have a detailed plan laid out for the pursuit of funding . It helps motivate as an agile method that shows step by step plans and progress towards established goals . with a Monitoring and Evaluation plan laid out , the chances for success with a loan requests are also very high . MEH will automatically get the funding if they have a well planned out M&E foundation . The non-hands on members of the MEH group also have a backdrop to look at to look at when following up on the project 's schedule .

  • Doromankaa, i am with you on this point. I think that is is important to know what your goals right from the beginnign and how you are intending to achieve them. With an M&E plan, it makes it easy for you to assess these goals and if our project is achieving all set targets. If not, then, it gives you the possibility to get back on the drawing board and makes strategic changes that are required to bring you back on the road to success.

  • I think that you should create an M&E plan because it will help you to have a well structure program, you will be able to measure progress, identify Problems & minimize risk of project failure, it ensure timeliness, accountability, transparency and allow you to communicate project success to donors.

I think MEH should create a M&E plan because in addition to my fellow peer's contribution it will show credibility and accountability of the project. as it stands right now MEH seems Like a dodgy project that simply got into it for the money. additionally a M&E plan will show the project's likelihood of continuity and sustenance which even though it may have does have the feasible data to support it.

Agreed, without an M&E plan the sustainability and success of a particular project is dubious, to say the least.

Ahmed you make me laugh - i am not sure where you got that MEH is a dodgy project that simply got into it for the money. Is it because it is a project that will allow girls to borrow small amounts of money. Could it be that MEH do not have the expertise that GOOD has and that they only need assistance in coming up with a n M&E plan and ways to measure their activities and decide what they will use as indicators of measurement. To me both indicators mentioned above could work. Initially the loans themselves to see how many of the girls would approach MEH and obtain the loans and then to see how many businesses are opened from receipt of these loans. Anyone with me on this point? Would like to see some discussion so that we can straight away dispel this presumption that MEH is a dodgy project. haha

  • I think that you should create an M&E plan because it will help you collect information that will measure the process of the your project. It will also help you track the performance and the effectiveness of the project, which in turn allows you to scale how well you have achieved your objectives and then enables you to know the necessary area for adjustment.

  • I think it is important to start a M&E plan because it will allow to keep track of the way the project is progressing numbers wise as well as quality wise. This will provide the manager with crucial information if the project is going well or not. If not, it will alert the manager so that he can overcame these issue. Finally, it creates a platform to a better reporting of the data to the donors.

  • I think that M&E have to be created to assess of the project is achieving objectives that were set. It allows the manager to better understand if strategic changes are needed and act accordingly. It also makes the project more reliable. These will show how reliable is the NGO. These usually are assessed by the donor in case of donation.

  • I think that an M&E plan should be put in place in order to streamline the outcomes of the implementation plan of the project.

  • I think that you should create an M&E plan because creating the plan is a way of teaching the girls how and also importance of savings of saving, creating the plan is also a way of securing there finances at either the long run or the short run depending on how many years the save for.
and lastly teaching them how t save is a way of getting them involve in the project.

  • I think you should create an M&E plan to help understand your goal and objective and for you to assess that your project is achieving set targets. It will also help to organize the roles and responsibilities of every staff on your project.

M&E plan will also help in monitoring the progress of the project, ensuring it is going according to plan in terms of resources, time, planning and outcomes, and furthermore ensure that data is adequately collected, measured and used to evaluate the success of the project. Your donors will decide on your accountability, upon which further collaborations could be established.

  • I think MEH should prepare a M&E plan, because in this way they can check how the projects is going on and how and if the obejectibve, the results and the activities have been achieved. Defining good indicators will help to design an efficent M&E Plan.
Another advantage in designing a M&E plan, is define if the loan we are managing are enough to achieve our goals. Just in this way we can convince and demonstrate how good we are in managing our project in order to have new opporunity to finance our projects

  • An M&E is important for a project success, any project without it risks to lose out on so much.
Why would I advise MEH to have a plan?

    • To consistently track progress, catch things that are not going as planned and put corrective measure as they come.
    • Every project works within a set timeline. This determines its efficiency and effectiveness. Working without an M&E plan means that you ca easily mess the budget and time without even realizing it-therefore resulting to project failure
*There is so much that is learnt as a project progresses, some things come up that were not intended, having an M&E plan creates clear focus on continuous learning and decision making process
*You cannot measure the impact that your project has if you do not come up with clear indicators/metrics of success
*An M&E plan helps the project team to stay focused on the project goals.
*Project funders need accountability that can only be achieved through a clear M&E plan
*It is expensive to put a corrective measures when you realize late in the project that something went wrong without knowing.

programmes, improved management and a better assessment of their impact.

I totally agree with you , a well define M&E plan describes the objectives of the entire project ,it outlines possible measures on how to achieve this objectives, it put in place strategies measures on how to properly follow up the progress towards achievement of the said objectives.
It also list out keys tools which will be use to capture raw information(data) and analysis them for proper implementation of the project.

They already have a vision but the vision must have a strategy and the resources required to achieve the project goals. They need to have a clear vision for them to realize the kind of outcome they intend to achieve so that they impact on the community/girls. They need to quickly and appropriately respond to the challenges and opportunities already identified. The results based management will be able to assist them in the collection of data at every stage of the implementation of their project by providing or using a set of principles, approaches and tools which will help the project. • MEL is important to project implementation because it provides the vision. Project management and implementation is a process that has a beginning and an end. You start from a known position and end at a predicted position. As much as the planning may be thorough, chances of unknown circumstance occurring will always be there. So, to compare the achievement that is being actually implemented against what was planned, is important in order to keep the ship on course.
It is only through critical observations of what is going on that the targets will not be missed. Through M&E it is possible to inform everyone concerned that we are on course or we have veered off course. Once this status is known in time, it becomes possible to correct the situation.
However, for M&E to do so, there must be a plan on how data that will help in controlling the project, will be collected, analyzed and inform the parties concerned. So, in a nutshell, M&E is very important to projects.

  • The importance of M&E cannot overemphasized. The importance of M&E are as follows:

    • It help to sets the goals of the project.

    • It helps measure the progress of the project activities within the program.

    • The impact of the project to the beneficiaries can easily be assessed through the use an M&E tool.

    • It helps to get feedbacks from the beneficiaries of the project

    • It helps also to give recommendations on how project activities can be improved.

With the M&E plan, you are confident of success.

  • You should create an M&E plan to:

    • clearly identify what success looks like for this project and clearly define what change you are aiming to achieve
    • outline how the team can measure progress to see whether the project is on track, or needs review and adaptation to ensure it has successful outcomes
    • generate monitoring data to enable the project team to communicate effectively with each other and beneficiaries based on this evidence of what is/isn't working and respond in a timely manner ensuring project success
    • identify any project adaptions which differ significantly to the proposal activities and/or budget
    • communicate with donors and seek approval for adaptations as required in the process of project delivery -> timely, informed communication ensures effective stakeholder relations, prevents issues at the end of the project/funding cycle and promotes successful funding relationships
    • provide data for project progress reports, and contribute to the data set for evaluating overall project success and impact.

The creation and implementation of an effective M&E plan guides the team to focus on meeting the intended outcomes of the project i.e. the change, rather than focusing only on activities which may not necessarily lead to the change that was anticipated.

This is a good point as the PMP has become increasingly popular depending on the donor, particularly USAID. Donors may have their own format that they require you to complete for their own purposes of standardisation or measurement. So having clear M&E plans makes it easier for organisations to adapt or respond to donor compliance requests.

If it is not the case, the project manager should decide on corrective action to be implemented by one of the partners. It is quite normal for a project to face difficulties but it is not important to communicate on all of them. What is important is to react and to take actions.

  • Are you suggesting that donors might be a bit too prescriptive? There is certainly some truth there but at the same time, donors must themselves monitor how their program are implemented via projects.

  • M&E in this context become Paramount because the so called project MEH is a blind project without knowing where it is heading to. However, M&E plan need to be created to measure the success or failure in order to continue at the same manner or adjust. In essence, to meet the end objective.

In other hand, GOOD is good to go because there is tract and accurate data to show the progress.

Sample Post: I think that you should create an M&E plan because __________ .

Respond to at least two of your peers’ messages. Which of the reasons for starting an M&E plan do you find the most convincing? Are there any other reasons for starting an M&E plan that your peer has missed?

It is always good to have a project M&E plan, this is because with M&E plan, the project will have information to analyze and report appropriately

  • Any project that does not have an M&E Plan is potentially gonna fail because there is no clear path on what information to be collected, how it should be collected, how to measure it, when to measure, why measuring it and who should use it it

I think you should create an M & E plan because it will allow you to communicate the success of your project to donors, which will allow you to continue to get funded. The chances of receiving continued funding for the project would be greatly reduced if you cannot provide convincing stats in your reports and proposals. Furthermore, constructing an MEL plan will help you to weigh the pros and cons of different indicators that your team is debating.

    Good morning to All.
Mr Manager, I think you should set up M&E plan for the project HEM because, it will help you to feeds your donors with good Data information.
Reduce project failure and help you to track all information with regards to the project, help you to identify problem and the solution for such problem..

  • This is because by using M&E it will help them to easily know the progress of there project management they will be able to know if anything comes to hinder the progress and a way to handle any issues along the way. And it will give them accurate data that is needed

I think that you should create an M&E plan because you need to know how to measure and get the data that you need. What needs to be done first is to identify the goals for your project and work out the strategy plan for the your project. If the goal is to be able to loan out small amounts of money to girls; to see the success of this several things have to be planned and measured, for example; which communities are being looked at (how many?), people in charge of the micro loans, need a record each month of loans given out, eligibility of getting the loan?, put a time frame of when to measure success of the individuals business (6 months?)- this is to help keep track of how many loans are being given out and to whom, as well as to have date to present to your funders and partners.

Respond to at least two of your peers’ messages. Which of the reasons for starting an M&E plan do you find the most convincing? Are there any other reasons for starting an M&E plan that your peer has missed?

I think that you should create an M&E plan because creating the plan make the project easier and faster. Doing this you will have to get an M&E officer to help you monitor i.e He/She will help to collect project information (data) regularly which will help you to measure the progress of the project and also help you evaluate how the project have achieve it goals.

I think that you should create an M&E plan because you need to work out the goals and strategy plan for your project. Since you do not know how to get the data or even know what to measure it is vital to create and MEL framework to help you measure and collect the data you need.
In terms of getting the data you need, clear links of collecting the data need to be made; who's collecting the data, how many communities is this project in?, pla time frame and record keep of who's getting loaned money and their business venture. Also, need to measure number of people loaned money, measure the success of the business venture on a 6 month mark, also eligibility of individuals asking for a loan needs to be clarified to be a more successful project.
This will all help with recording information for funders and partners.

  • The MEH programme should create a M&E plan as this would aid in measuring the magnitude of improvement achieved by the programme, the reach as well as the efficiency. The plan would also help in scaling the economical effect of the programme.
Monitoring could be done by taking account of girls involved in the programme on a daily basis as well as the level of publicity reached. An index of measuring the manner in which the loans are used should also be set up. Then evaluation should be checked via the business growth of the girls allocated the loan, since the aim of the program is to borrow out money as a means of easing livelihood. And not to be forgotten is a good financial report that would enhance more donation into the programme.

I think you should create an M&E plan because unlike normal business organizations, in the social sector the success of an organization cannot be measured in the monetary wealth created by its operations, instead it needs to develop specific and measurable indicators that could help as a guide to improve on the way and have better results at the end...Because as the say says: what cannot be measured, cannot be improved!!

I really love the last sentence, as it covers all. The measurement could be monetary, achievements, and success of the organization.

  • Good morning Manager,

I think that it is a good idea to develop a M&E plan because of the following reasons:

    1. Communication: having data about the performance will help to communicate to external stakeholders the results, engage the society and so be more appealing for funding
    2. Project management: having processes for collecting data in a structural way help to have under control the programme, so detect the risks and mitigate them accordingly on time
    3. Motivation tool: designing appropriately the KPIs of the programme can also help to motivate the employees to achieve the objectives as they can see tangible/measurable results
    4. Performance tool: having a performance system will help the management team to reward employees based on performance and so push for meritocracy
    5. Continuous Improvement: monitoring the processes and the results help to detect pain points and potential improvements of the programme, so it can be a tool for fostering a bigger impact

For the reasons above I believe it is critical to discuss together a share plan for M&E and agree on it with the team.

With the help of the defined metrics, it is also easier to document and scale up these projects in various

In the MEH project how can they quantify the performance? would you please elaborate more.

  • I think you should create an M&E plan because without the M&E plan you cannot track the progress of your project, you cannot measure the success of your project and you cannot proof that you are doing a very good project for the communities.

  • The M&E Plan will help in assessing progress of the program toward achieving its goals and objectives.

  • I will suggest MEH's project manager as following way.

I think that you should create an M&E plan because you can track the progress of your project by monitoring the how much of girls get loan from the project. If you prepared good evaluation plan then you can measure the effectiveness and efficiency of the project and It also helps you to track the what output/outcomes were expected and what happens in reality. We can measure our success through the evaluation so you have to prepare the evaluation plan. The monitoring plan help you track how much girls getting loan and you can compare that amount with our target and help in decision making if there required any modification in project activities or in action plan which finally leads to the project success.

After all you can prepare the good project report with clear output having good indicators and that may lead to further funding of the project and creating further sustainable model in the same project.

It will clearly define what your project goals are and what you need to be measuring exactly like, the how many girl have got loans in 6 months, the M&E plan also helps to track the progress of the project and the direction its taking which helps to catch anything not going according to plan and rectify it immediately. An M&E Plan also helps measuring success of the project.

I agree with you, M&E plan will help manager to have a track of the project and knowing day to day progress and if monitoring report show there something wrong it will be easier to rectify.

  • Hi guys,
I will advice MEH project manager to have a M&E plan so he make a bridge of connection between donors and beneficiaries about on going activities of the project, also through quarter reports, M&E team can know if they are going to meet the planned outcome and the percentage of success.
Other thing is M&E plan will help in controlling their time of execution of their activities and knowing if they are going to complete the project in planned time or more than planned time.
The last thing is donors will draw their trust to the project executors and beneficiaries knowing that the planned budget is used to the right activities and targeted group are benefiting from the project.

  • I think that you should create an M&E plan because it will help you measure, track, monitor and evaluate project processes in the different phase.
Secondly, it will help stakeholders feel safe and donors will be more confident in your organizational activities and funding.
Also, it increase the confidence of the beneficiaries but it will also create an atmosphere of transparency and accountability for the project. This will attract more stakeholders, clients etc.

I think that communicate success to donors is just one of the reasons that requires to design an effective M&E plan. In my experience, NGOs have a double accountability: towards donors and towards beneficiaries. Very often the two accountabilities are conflicting and an effective M&S system may help to strike a balance.
An effective M&E system is also instrumental to reach an internal goal: to becoming a learning organization. To document and communicate success is an important external goal, however to address failures is crucial for an NGOs that wants to became more effective and accountable towards both beneficiaries and donors
