  • Build trust is key to make a successful engagement process. Trust is built through expertise, competency and good communication and compromise in order to respect the agreements betweeen parts.

  • I want to start with the famous Hollywood saying, “Show, don’t tell.” I totally agree with this statement. Recently, I faced such a situation. We are implementing a software development project that is funded by a donor. The project scope has been finalized with the beneficiaries. The project is on a very tight schedule. But it's very difficult to deliver all the modules within the timeline. So, we offered to divide the scope into multiple phases and told them if we were unable to finish all the committed modules within the project period, we would keep some money aside for developing the rest of the modules. Now they want to see how much money we will allocate for how many modules. However, they do not believe in verbal commitment; instead, they prefer written commitment. when we have done this, their trust and cooperation with us increased more than our expectation.

As a manager you need to know the difference between the two so that you can respond to the situation appropriately. To build trust with the stakeholders you must have some credibility, authority and be knowledgeable in the matter that needs to be resolves, not having these skills can worsen the situation instead of improving it.
