Targets must be REALISTIC so expectations of people, places and projects are reasonable and achievable within real life circumstances and constraints. From staff to all stakeholders, we all need achievable progress to keep momentum and fuel optimism.
Totally agree Ardleigh on targets needing to be ATTAINABLE. I find ATTAINABLE and REALISTIC in the SMART metrics to be very close, even overlapping. But it's a great acronym!
Targets must be attainable or achievable within a specific time frame in order to support the existence of the activities. It will become apparent in planning if indeed the attainment of said goal is not viable based upon resources, etc. and thus should be modified accordingly.

Attainable or achievable are key to developing a program which will hopefully succeed. If goals are not attainable within the specified time frame, then they must be modified accordingly. Sometimes it is more a matter of trying not to do everything all at once.

it is difficult to understand that your program or services may not be the only thing impacting the outcome. the community, environment or economy can effect the outcome.
In similar manner, activities should be measurable. For example, if you plan to train say 400 farmers how to manage their coffee farm using inputs as well as technologies, it is clearly quantifiable.

sure your targets should be realistic and i can inform you that to have a realistic target you must first be specific on what you are real going to solve in order to have a realistic interjection.
that's when we apply in our attainable measures, because for u solving that problem your basically not the first person to come through to solve the problem but this helps us learn from their mistakes and be able to choose our targets/goals timely which are realistic to the situation on ground.

Attainable: All of our targets should be attainable and achievable to insure progress is being made. However, unobtainable and unrealistic results will also drive a division in the faith and support of donors and volunteers. Also, impossible and fruitless endeavors often lead to discouragement and burn-out.

Target should remain realistic because if you're not being real to yourself in targeting, you can end up finding implementation not achieving or overachieving due to having not been realistic in setting the targets. from there you can think you are in good progress or bad progress while you are in a different.
For me, the objectives must be SMART:
Specific because it should only concern a specific objective
Measurable because it allows us to measure the progress in achieving the objectives;
Achievable because we must be able to achieve it under the conditions set;
Realistic because it takes into account the context and the situation;
Time-bound because it has a deadline
Time-boubd goals helps me feel the sense of urgency and start working on the project quickly without waiting for the right time or anything like that

When reading the literature for this module I highlighted the following points:
o Without targets for my ultimate outcomes, my organization will not be able to develop targets for my intermediate outcomes or even for the activities and outputs leading to them.
o If my organization meets its targets, I may then ask whether it can meet even higher ones. But if my organization fails to meet its targets, for ultimate or intermediate outcomes, activities, outputs, I should then examine the causes of underperformance.

I've studied SMART goals since undergrad; and my favorite has always been "measurable". I like things that I can see; I like facts; the tangible. We must make a stream line of processes that will lead to the goal. They must be clear and precise and calculated.
