This is true and one might be distracted doing other things that do not take the project closer to achieving the ultimate outcome
Targets should be clear because if this is not the case, you may be aiming to reach a certain aspect of the target and not the other. also, different people may interpret that target differently... This is so important to make sure that only a specific and one aspect is being considered under the target, to properly track project progress...
otherwise, you are just wasting resources...
this becomes key during evaluation, when you want to measure how much a program contributed to the ultimate outcome...
very true. tracking progress is imperative...
It's very hard to pick one since all of them are necessary for measurement. However, I would go for 'Realistic'. If the indicators are not realistic, it would be hard to achieve the goal.
It should be specific, because it tailors & narrows the path to follow to reach success
Yep, I agree with your point
Targets should be specific and unambiguously stated in order to measure the performance of the program. This will enable all stakeholders to keep track of what need to be accomplished in the program and how this goal will be accomplished
Setting targets for activities was a little tricky. Does anyone have any material or resource to aid with regards to this?
Yes you're right. I agree with you.
Every activity should have a time bound inorder to be effective
It is good to specific your activity
The activity should be attainable
Indicators should be measurable because they are the instruments project managers and all stakeholders use to measure progress towards the ultimate outcome. They convey information about corrective measures against setbacks and challenges that might impede the project's goals.
Timely. Setting a timeline for goals and targets is critical to enable evaluation of progress, sucess and impact. If a target or goal is untimed, it is impossible to judge whether it has been met as the trajectory towrad completion could merely be moving at snail pace. Setting timed targets enables evaluation points throughout the target journey that give reasonable indication whether the activities are on track to achieve the target or not.
Targets should be Specific by this i mean targets should be clear. If targets are clearly indicated the cases of misinterpretation may not occur which will create a direct impact to the beneficiaries and the community.
Well explained
Surely if your indicators cannot be measured then how will you track the progress? While measuring the indicators ensure that they should be quantifiable specially the input, output and intermediate outcome indicators
Targets should be time bound as because, in project every activity has a specific time frame, where it should be completed, otherwise a program manager would definitely request for no cost extension.
Target should be timely, attainable and realistic. It must be set with the mindset that it can be accomplished. It shouldn't be too cumbersome or ambiguous to achieve
Yes, it should be time -bound. When there is a set target that's timely, attainable and realistic, one would be able to convince stakeholders such as funders easily
Timely – having a specific time frame to accomplish an activity and reach an outcome provides guidance on how to pace productivity and when to measure progress.

I agree, without this metric you could continue on a path that will not be successful.
I agree, without this metric you could continue on a path that will not be successful.
Goals and targets must be measurable so that quantitative results may be obtained and dissected to ensure goal/target is being met.
The target should be timely so we can measure its outcome in a specific timeframes and make adjustments if need it.
Measurable. This is key for you to determine whether your efforts through the intervention are contributing anything towards the ultimate goal
Target should be realistic because taking on something that is out of the organizational scope of work will cause failure. It could demoralize organizational stakeholders like the staff or even funders. Also, working on something way over the organizational budget will cause failure because chances are that the project may be abandoned before completion.
Targets should be attainable; because otherwise the process is futile, and unproductive. Energy and time should be spent wisely as it is such a precious resource.
I totally agree...
Timely. To make sure the goal can be implemented by a certain time. This helps with time management.
Targets must be REALISTIC so expectations of people, places and projects are reasonable and achievable within real life circumstances and constraints. From staff to all stakeholders, we all need achievable progress to keep momentum and fuel optimism.
Totally agree Ardleigh on targets needing to be ATTAINABLE. I find ATTAINABLE and REALISTIC in the SMART metrics to be very close, even overlapping. But it's a great acronym!
Targets must be attainable or achievable within a specific time frame in order to support the existence of the activities. It will become apparent in planning if indeed the attainment of said goal is not viable based upon resources, etc. and thus should be modified accordingly.
@Ducaysane38 said in Module 6: Discussion:
The target should be clear and focus on because without clearable of target you are doing nothing and there is no project in there.
Attainable or achievable are key to developing a program which will hopefully succeed. If goals are not attainable within the specified time frame, then they must be modified accordingly. Sometimes it is more a matter of trying not to do everything all at once.
Why do I keep seeing this?
timely is required as you need to understand your start and end date for measuring your successfulness.
we need to be realistic with our goals, are the obtainable? however, just because someone else hasn't completed it doesn't mean it cannot be accomplished.
Agree with many of the comments around the target and goals.
it is difficult to understand that your program or services may not be the only thing impacting the outcome. the community, environment or economy can effect the outcome.
In similar manner, activities should be measurable. For example, if you plan to train say 400 farmers how to manage their coffee farm using inputs as well as technologies, it is clearly quantifiable.
A very good work
Agreed identified targets helps in designing the project activities.
Activities should be planned using a particular unit as measurement so that results will b identified in an accurate method
Specific goals are achievable, because the plan for activities and budget will be focused against time.
Specific; you must be clear in identifying your goal and focused on how different measures will be specifically used to attain your goal at the end of the day.
sure your targets should be realistic and i can inform you that to have a realistic target you must first be specific on what you are real going to solve in order to have a realistic interjection.
that's when we apply in our attainable measures, because for u solving that problem your basically not the first person to come through to solve the problem but this helps us learn from their mistakes and be able to choose our targets/goals timely which are realistic to the situation on ground.
good submission, sometimes we need to give ourselves time to accomplish certain work

In Module 6, you learned about specifying metrics and targets to measure organizational effectiveness and progress. In the reading, you learned that the targets you choose should be SMART:
Specific: clear and focused to avoid misinterpretation.
Measurable: can be quantified and compared to other data.
Attainable: achievable, reasonable, and credible under conditions expected.
Realistic: fits into the organization's constraints and is cost-effective.
Timely: doable within the time frame given. In a discussion post below, choose one of these words (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, or timely) and, in a few sentences, describe why it is so important for establishing helpful metrics.
For example, you might write “Targets should be measurable because otherwise you might not know how much progress you are making. This is so important, because without the ability to measure our progress, we would not know how effective our work is!”
After responding, please reply to at least one other learner and respond to their ideas.

it should be SMART to make sure the organization is capable to reach to the final outcome. so i appreciate the lesson so much.

Attainable: All of our targets should be attainable and achievable to insure progress is being made. However, unobtainable and unrealistic results will also drive a division in the faith and support of donors and volunteers. Also, impossible and fruitless endeavors often lead to discouragement and burn-out.
Very true.
Very true.
Very good
Without clearly defined targets, you won't know which way you are headed in your project/program.
I agree with you.
targets should be mesuarable because creating data is the key to a realistic ork. From that data you should check if the project is working and how to improve it.
I believe that metrics and targets should be attainable and realistic because it is important for organizations to ascertain their organizational capacity before setting out to undertake programs
C'est un module très instructif. On a tendance à faire des hypothèses quand aux besoins des bénéficiaires des programmes communautaires, mais cette session vient nous ramener à l'ordre.
Target should remain realistic because if you're not being real to yourself in targeting, you can end up finding implementation not achieving or overachieving due to having not been realistic in setting the targets. from there you can think you are in good progress or bad progress while you are in a different.
For me, the objectives must be SMART:
Specific because it should only concern a specific objective
Measurable because it allows us to measure the progress in achieving the objectives;
Achievable because we must be able to achieve it under the conditions set;
Realistic because it takes into account the context and the situation;
Time-bound because it has a deadline
Time-boubd goals helps me feel the sense of urgency and start working on the project quickly without waiting for the right time or anything like that
Attainable here refers to the idea being understood by both the implementing staff, beneficiaries and stakeholders.
Many high falooting ideas and concepts are usually not tested with stakeholders before being implemented.
This gives credence to the human centered approach of developing programs for development work.
People should be involved in developing a strategy for a problem that affects them directly.
Yeah!
You need to be sure of what you want to achieve.
Otherwise when you achieve it, you wouldn't know!
Attainability.
Being able to judge for oneself whether the goals of the project will be met are a great introspective element for the project. Through analysis ofthe goal being met, the project can properly adjust or redefine their objectives/goals and ensure the success of the project.
Great insights there. Awesome way to put it.
Being Specific, is a crucial bench mark to measure success, it defines types of succusses that you are going to achieve from your activitie to the ultimate outcomes.

When reading the literature for this module I highlighted the following points:
o Without targets for my ultimate outcomes, my organization will not be able to develop targets for my intermediate outcomes or even for the activities and outputs leading to them.
o If my organization meets its targets, I may then ask whether it can meet even higher ones. But if my organization fails to meet its targets, for ultimate or intermediate outcomes, activities, outputs, I should then examine the causes of underperformance.
the only obstacle is the covid situation
Targets should be timely and not open-ended because results need to be established within a reasonable timeframe in order to assess effectiveness.
Targets should be timely and not open-ended because results need to be established within a reasonable timeframe in order to assess effectiveness.
I agree that targets should be realistic, because otherwise the ability to achieve goals are simply "unrealistic" and would be unattainable.
Important to be able to measure clearly your ultimate outcome.
Measurable: can be quantified and compared to other data.
To me this gives the best indicators regarding whether or not goals were acheived.
Target should be timely so that you won't end up spending time not doing anything.
Definitely
Timely, I think is one important factor that can help to try to reach our goal in a "real" perspective. Put in consideration a time line gives us the steps we need to do.
Timely - the metrics should be doable within realistic time frames
Абсолютно. это очень важно
The target should be timely, because setting a time frame gives you a sense of urgency to accomplish. It is not just enough to be executing a project endlessly, but there is a sense of direction, when you know what is expected to have been accomplished according to specific time.
It is important to take your targets specific and devoid of any ambiguity
The goal must be specific as per project. It should answer
I. what needs to be accomplished
II. by who,
III. when, and the process (How) to be implemented to carry out the tasks.
Meaningful performance measures start with measurable goals. This means that your goal needs to be worded clearly enough and specifically enough that you can imagine how you’ll recognise when it becomes real. So you might first want to check if your current goals are measurable
Developing outcomes that are attainable is, for me, paramount of the metrics. Measuring and being specific and all others are important, but if goals are not attainable, resources, time, effort, etc. are wasted and a second opportunity to achieve these outcomes may never present itself.
This module is quite is interesting and demands some critical thinking. It already enters into the topic of project monitoring and hints on evaluation, very critical aspects of project designing.
Definitely! I agree
Realistic, it must be realist for it to able to be achieved otherwise we wont be able to accomplish it.
The SMART method even effective for some complex situation with no clear vision
Measurability: Metrics must be measurable metrics are useful for tracking progress and changes that have occurred as a result of project interventions. This is a critical point of reference for project implementers.
Indeed, you see some project metric and targets that are far beyond available resources which leads to a lot of disappointments for project stakeholders.
Specific - when there is clarity and clear instruction anyone should be able to come behind you and get the job done with similar results
Specific - when there is clarity and clear instruction anyone should be able to come behind you and get the job done with similar results
Realistic.
The target set must be Realistic. Don't set bigger targets with an aim at pleasing the donor but in the end failing to achieve it. On the other hand Don't set low targets when there's a room to have a good and sizeable one, with an aim at duping the donor's funds by accomplishing it so easily.
Set real targets
