My project manger is the one who directly report to the representative country director. She sometimes raise up questions brought by her subordinates who experienced with some challenges regarding project activities, and expenses. Often time, she could directly respond to the team without referring to director, excepted some particularly things, for example less spending or over spending, this is required her to discuss with the director for approval.
What are the major decisions that are required to be referred to the CEO?
We are a very small organisation and the Operations General Manager is tasked with all the project management duties and reports directly to the CEO. All decisions are made by both parties.
@EleletaSurafel said in Module 1 Discussion: Project Governance:
At my organization, the project manager reports directly to the CEO, who independently makes up the entirety of the project governance body, since it’s a small organization. While this hierarchical structure has been put in place, no clear cut job descriptions and limits are there such as which of the three constraints the project manager is allowed to modify, if any, or how often updates are needed.
Any one here who works in a small non-profit such as mine, please share how you have found it best to work around these situations.
The same happens in my org
in my organization project manager report to general director. the project manager has authority to change schedules, tasks and cost that can incur up to 10% increment especially in area of construction. if it incur more than 10% the general director should decide.
the project manager prepare progress report every month and present to the general director
@Raksmey_Bo ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
@Raksmey_Bo ,the role of a CEO is to oversee the daily operations of an organization.A CEO may be an employee,a company director, founder or even owner. For example,in case a major financial decision needs to be made, the CEO will surely have to be consulted.
@Shushenka ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.

Project governance
Project governance refers to “the framework, functions, and processes that guide project management”. This oversight function is aligned with the organization’s leadership structure and decision-making processes.
It defines
The governance encompasses the entire project life cycle and defines structured roles, responsibilities and accountabilities within the project.
@ishfaqh12 ,thanks for sharing such a brilliant and comprehensive definition of Project Governance.I am certain that other learners will appreciate it too.
The project manager is able to change task, to hire or fire staff. He has a control on everything happen about the prject.

@CHIKUSAMUEL ,ok...
In my organization, the project manager reports directly to program coordinator. She fully managed three constraints by herself.
In my organization the project manager reports directly to programme's manager.
At our organization, there are various stipulated roles specifically for each office. This is important to avoid duplication of roles or usurping of work to be executed. The Project manager reports to the Director and the Project Manager manages the various projects, analyses data and produces reports for all the stakeholders to understand the project progress.
@Sarah_1 ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure. What other roles does the project manager play in your organization?
@Nzukibee ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
@polycarpouko ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
In our Organization, Project manager writtes project reports and gives them to General Manager. Then, the General Manager presents them to donators.
@mam_celia, thank you for updating us on the duties of your project manager.
at my organization, the Project manager reports to the country director via Programs manager
In our projects, the project manager reports to the group people including the chairmen of the entire organization. But they don’t know exactly about the project. The project manager can change schedules and tasks but he need to get the permission from them to change any budgets, deadlines or requirements.
Project Governance from what i understand, it constituted the people who have a higher authority over a project manager. The give the guide lines upon which a project manager manges.
@rhud ,thanks for expressing your point of view on project governance.
@Gladwinr ,thanks for your answer. What other roles does the Project Manager play at your organization?
@DrAungKhineZaw ,thanks for sharing yor organization's project governance structure.
Hello, can you clarify who is held accountable for the success or failure of the project?
the project manager is held accountable for the success or failure of the project
@Brittneyejsmith, the entire team have a role to play in the execution of a project, however, a leader must be held accountable for the activities of the team. As a result, the failure of a project should be attributed to the leader of the project - Project Manager.
@Gladwinr ,thanks for your answer.
In my small organization, the PM will generally work directly with the president and CEO. No unilateral decisions are ever made, as we value collaboration and equity when we build. This means that for things like task and planning group scheduling changes, the PM would consult with the planning group and facilitate an agreement on changes, and for things like budget shifts, scope changes, communications strategies, etc., we work more closely in partnership with the president.
@Yoofiquansah, in previous work, I've used something called a RACI ("Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed") matrix. At the organization that used this specific matrix (not my current), the Accountable person was the top of the project governance, not the project manager. I believe we had them in the Accountable position because they were the ultimate deciders of the bigger decisions throughout the projects. What are your thoughts on this? Does it make sense to have multiple accountable persons?
@Tamika_Davis ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure in such a clear, concise manner.
The project manager can change deadlines, tasks and schedules. However, the budget cannot be modified without authorization from the managing director. There is a council that discusses funding for projects and an executive Committee that approves the funding. The donor has representative that seat in the council meeting.
@Tamika_Davis I'm familiar with RACI matrix. I think it works well when the team really puts it to use, it can also be helpful for a team member to understand all the parts that should be involved in a process or cycle.
@AdenikeAjagunna ,thanks for sharing important insights about project governance.
It was a great learning experience for me. It is my first time learning about how the project governance works.
Do you know of any one who has successfully had the conversation about how to set these parameters as the project manager with the higher ups?
@simioyelami ,I am glad that you've realized how this course has greatly impacted you.Its also nice to know that you've been enlightened with knowledge about project governance.
@amcantoral ,I am certain that fellow learners with knowledge and expertise in the field of project management will reach out to you soon.
On our projects, the project manager use to report to the Team Lead until the Team Lead left for another work, then reporting of the Manager move to the CEO of the company.
The project manager gets permission from the Director before any major changes on budgets, deadlines, or requirements are made.
I love the emphasis on the importance of planning. It helps to keep everything in check. It was quite insightful
@Moseerilz ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure with us.
@LakanseTobi ,thanksfor expressing your point of view on our discussion forum.
The major decisions that have direct impact on the beneficiary should be the ones to be handled by the donors and top decision organ because that would form the best area to do an evaluation and measure impact to scale.
Indirect impact decisions should be allowed to management so as to avoid bottlenecks in decisions making due to bureaucracy
@collinskiruhi ,thanks for expressing your point of view on project governance.
Every new Project has to be approached as a New and Different Scenario .
So The CEO , Project Manager and the Donor has to have an open discussion regarding the ground realities and change accordingly to achieve the necessary outcome.
@manjunathmadabal ,thanks for expressing your point of view on cost estimation.
In my Small Organization, The CEO and Management Agree on and changes for Budget, schedule and report to the donor on cost of extension
this module explain how project managers amd stack-holder can negotiate if the project going wrong
In our organization, a project manager responds to the CEO/President for approvals and budget/timeline. However, the project manager is also part of team where there is enough flexibility that these changes can be proposed to the CEO and affirmed rather than asking the CEO to make those decisions directly. For things of a larger nature, the Board would probably need to get involved.
I really appreciated this course. Its very simplified, short but does not miss important issues. I had no clue about project governance before this course, I got very essential issues from this section for social impacting project management
@Lemi_Wana ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure with us.What roles does the project manager play at your organization?

@fbadiane ,I love how you've clearly articulated your organization's project governance structure.
For my organization, the project governance procedure is, the Project/Program Manager reports directly to the Executive Director. The PM is can change the scope/deliverables of the project with approval from the Management.
@fideliskika ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure with us.
In my organization the project manager, in this case me, report directly to the country manager in order to make changes in the project charter if required. Also if the Project Governance is not available then I am authorized to make the key decision as per the requirement.
Among many;
The Project Plan Activities according its scope time
The Project Plan the Budget with the finance manager along the activities
The Project manager receives activities reports from the project team
The project complied general
@Syed_M_Faraz, thanks for the explicit update Mr. Project Manager. Please, does your authorization include change in budget or scope, in the absence of the Project Governance?
@Lemi_Wana, thanks for joining the discussion.
project governance has to be clearly stated
in the project charter. it helps in knowing who to hold responsible when issues arise and also helps the project manager to know the extent of his power or the extent to which he can influence changes.
@DanOke ,thanks for sharing your knowledge of project governance with us.I am certain that other learners will appreciate it too.
In our non-profit organisation, the Project Manager reports directly to the Advisory Committee. We are currently working on defining the roles and responsibilities so that we can operate more effectively.
@msdigam ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
I have had a chance to work in such rigid environments and expectations on a Project Manager are usually high regardless f the fact that his/her roles were never clearly spelt out in whatever form. It is usually risky because in cases of any mishaps the Project Manager faces the whole wrath. on the other hand, all successes are celebrated and owned by all!
Project governance is the management framework within which project decisions are made. Project governance is a critical element of any project, since the accountabilities and responsibilities associated
@bwamubeyi ,you surely have a point you're putting across. Thanks for expressing your point of view on project governance.
@cijolig2 ,your definition of project governance is on point. Thanks for sharing it with us.
In our company the project manager reports to the General manager. The General manager reports to the Shareholders. The project manager cannot discuss the project's problems with the Shareholders only with the General manager.
Hello @Vladislav ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
Project Governance
IN our Organization many project run at same time here in each Project Project Manager are responsible for governance but he is accountable to country manager .
In my organization the Project Manager reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and if he is to make any change on the project implementation he must first consult the CEO and if the CEO agrees with his request then the CEO will consult with the donor for final approval.
In our construction company we have a Chief Operating officer who the project Manager, Finance director and project supervisors report to. He in turn reports to the CEO and the board
@ismail_zeeshan ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
@aondubi ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
@TonniyingE ,thanks for sharing your organization's project governance structure.
In our organization, the project manager reports to the CEO. The CEO is able to take decision based on this report.
If the project wants to be changed, the CEO must have a meeting whith the project manager and the administraion officer.
Awesome course
@eddy_muruhuka, thanks for your submission to the ensuing discussion.
Project governance--how decisions are made and authority is distributed on a project--is an extremely important topic. How does your team organize project governance? In this module's discussion, share your team's governance structure. Who does the project manager report to? What kinds of decisions is the project manager allowed to make?
Find at least one post that you are curious to learn more about. Reply to that post by asking a clarifying question.
I have understand that the Project governance is the management framework within which project decisions are made. Project governance is a critical element of any project, since the accountabilities and responsibilities associated
@cijolig2, the above question refers, please we would love to hear your response to it for us to know a bit about your organization.
You are right in your assertion @gcijoli243. We would also love it if you could please share with us the governance structure in your organization
@Arkyadeep_420 ,I am glad that you realise how impactful this course has been for you.
The project governance structure comprises of 7 members, 3 of which are responsible for the day-to-day activities.
I am learning a lot from your contributions guys. I am in a set up that does not such a set as the one we are learning about
Project governance is the organizational structure put in place to provide technical oversight in project management with clearly define roles and responsibilities. Authority is assign to individuals, decision making process and reporting lines are also established
@AmbassadorAbraham, could you please elaborate further on the 7 issues you spoke about in your submission on project governance? What are they, and what brief duties are they involved in?
That sounds pleasing @ignitius. We hope you would make the best out of the moment here in PhilanthropyU.
@Bisong, you are right in your assertion. We would appreciate it greatly if you could share with us how the governance structure in your organization works.
I work in a small organisation. The Project manager reports the the director who sit will the donors. The donors are actively involved in the project therefore decision and made with donor engagement. The project manager makes changes with direct approval from the director.
