  • Marwa can use focus group discussions or community based workshops since the people are finding it difficult to communicate without the knowledge of their spouse.

  • I understand the fact that most of the population in South Sudan are not giving accurate personal information due to low literacy level rate and collecting data related to ages and name spelling is challenges to many researchers today.
First of all you need to understand your users first before you designed questionnaires/research for them.

  • Data can come from many different sources, even from pre-existing knowledge in the organisation. A good starting point is user research to gather insight into your users.
When designing personas, the story needs to cover the following:
Demographic presentation of the character (age, gender etc.)
General traits (occupation, interests, hobbies etc.)
Psychological traits (needs, motivations, aspirations etc.)

  • It is very important to understand the characteristics and cultures of the participant from whom we want to collect data. Without proper information about the targeted participant, it would be very difficult to get desired output from collected data.

  • The mode of data collection i intend to use is Document review, but i realize that the the sources of such documents may likely be from the government and the accuracy of information may be tempered. Therefore as a program Manager or M&E staff designing the data collection strategy, i will probably request and collect documents from more than one department and compare the quality and content of the data before making conclusive resolutions.

  • Data collection is necessary for practically any project. The data collected from stakeholders through different methods are used during the analysis of an intervention project's progress and impact. Data analysis is not just about interpreting the data collected. It is about accurate collection from the start. This is what facilitates purposeful analysis.

Stakeholders are people with a stake in the evaluation, including primary intended users and others. In order to facilitate purposeful collection of data it is necessary to understand stakeholders' needs and goals. This process entails conducting a series of interviews with stakeholders before implementing data collection.

Understanding and taking into account the priorities and concerns of our different stakeholders informs monitoring and evaluation planning, communication strategies during and after the evaluation, and supports the ultimate utilization of evaluation findings.

  • Marwa have to use the '' focus group' and ' community workshop' to get the data because only -30% can read the read a survey form.
She can not used survey, and interview because those women need their spouse or familly agreement firstly.

  • From the topic after studying ,understand that the following are to be defined to a certain knowledge their by, understand the group of people you will be working with before designing the tools and monitor data collection to see whether unexpected issues arise. also looking at the problem one should avoid when gathering data from a particular group, things to put into consideration are.
-What language(s) do these people speak?
-What is the average level of language proficiency?
-What is the literacy rate for this population?
-Which languages can people read? Write

  • We need to think about every factors that can affect on data collection process before the survey or other tools. Cultural, political, geographical and local context are key factors.

  • Understanding your users needs to have some basic information about them, such as
which language they speak. and their level of that language skills.
The culturally preferred method of communication.
    Their level of accessing technology.

  • During COVID, the ability to contact beneficiaries and collect data utilizing technology has become in many situations a necessity, though very difficult due to tech literacy levels and access to technology. There has been a lot of work done in order to improve both of these factors in order to ensure that communication is still possible and strong but that everyone remains safe.

Additionally, since I work in refugee resettlement in the US, all of these considerations vary greatly across all of the populations we serve. One thing that our donors emphasize is working towards "short and long-term goals" which are a very western concept in general and is a question that is difficult to ask within the first 30 days after arriving in a new country. Given the breadth of clients we serve (and our donor's requests), we need to ask the question, so this takes a lot of work talking to staff about how to address this question with different populations.

  • Understanding Your Participants

It is important to understand your participants because people in various locations, age groups, cultural backgrounds or social characteristics might require different methods of data collection. For example, in one of our data collection locations we noticed that women could not answer questions from strange men let alone go near them. We learnt that their Muslim principles did not allow the women to come near strange men. In this case our method of interviewing women had to incorporate more ladies so that they could interview the lady participants.

Whilst conducting a nutrition survey we were supposed to measure the height of the children. In order to collect this measurement, the data collectors had to let the child lie down on a height measuring board for the younger children. Unfortunately, the community associated this type of measurement as taking the length of a coffin for a dead body which cannot be done for a living person. They did not bring their children. This method of lying down the children could not work. We had to use the health surveillance assistants (HAS) who normally conduct under-five clinics in the area and also collect the same measurement to collect this data for the project. At least these HSAs could be trusted, they were a familiar face.

Finally, we also noticed that people from different locations of the project spoke different languages. This paused a challenge because people deep in the community could not clearly understand some of the concepts being questioned in the interviews if they were not explained properly. Hence there was need for explanation. The team planned to have enumerators fluent in their local language so that they could explain the questions properly in order to get the specific responses. We did not change the questions but did pretesting of the questionnaire (considering analysis) whilst the questions were being asked in their local language.

This shows that understanding and observing the participants before designing and use the data collection tool is important. It will help in guiding which method to use, which questions to ask and also which people can collect the data before embarking on the data collection exercise which can flop.

  • Approach to data collection method depends on the diffrent socio economic status of the participants of the process. To address the needs of the diffrent types of participats involved the method need to be different to get the most probable accurate data. The cultural, educational and demographic characteristics of people matter in data collection. In addition to this critical criteria data collectors need to be alert observants of the process and be flexible to get a better result of data collection.

  • As a researcher, it is vital you understand the composition of your respondents. As this would help in the planing and design of instruments, sample size determination and other things vital to the success of the research.

  • If you learn and understand well about your participants then you can able to use the right techniques in getting the desire information. If we blindly collect data with our preferred group and languages then there are chances that you get poor response and wrong information.

  • understanding its users requires great consideration of the socio-cultural parameters identifaints the social group on the one hand. but also on the other hand the adaptation effort made by the evaluator to the address of the donor to carry out the action well in the hands of the main beneficiaries.

  • a great course on data!

  • Sometimes it is always a big challenge working in a community where the literacy level is way too low, but as a strong M&E official, you have to explore most of the data collection methods

  • Marwa can use focus group discussions or community based workshops since the people are finding it difficult to communicate without the knowledge of their spouse.

  • To understand your users, the cultural, educational and demographic characteristics of people matter in data collection..

There is need to understand the group of people you would be working with before designing the tools.

Also there would be need to monitor data collection to see whether unexpected issues arises.

What language(s) do these people understand/speak?

What is the average level of language proficiency?

Which language can people read? Write?

  • The target audience is key in getting accurate result and generally achieving good project goal. This takes into consideration the place of understanding and monitoring. Understanding your users is pivotal to achieving good data collection and management system and monitoring is useful in getting timely information about the respondent.

  • Interesting proposition

  • Understanding the local population and creating of an agile data collection plan will make or break process. It is important to put sufficient emphasis in the backroom process before rolling our data collection.

  • Understanding the users helps one to make informed choices of the methods of data collection

  • It is very important and critical point of planning M&E-Data collection and dissemination to various users: Ranging from the Donor's to partners to government agencies to executives and program managers of staff. Therefore, prior to start data collection user mapping/stakeholder mapping and their need should be assess in detail for effectively and efficiently data collection without wasting of resources and energies. By this, the organization will be capable to identify the potential technical resources for this in terms of human and technology

  • The cultural, educational and demographic characteristics of people is very important to be considered in data collection. The data collection tools need to be designed to meet the cultural context.

In order for the data collection tools to work well for the group of people we are collecting data from, it is important to:

    1. Understand the group people, we will be working with, before designing the tools. We need to find out the:
      1.1 Language,
1.2 Average level of language proficiency,
      1.3 Literacy rate,
1.4 Which language people can read and write
1.5 What is the culturally preferred method of communication,
1.6 How skilled the people have,
1.7 What proportion of people have access to technologies such as mobile phone, computer, emails, etc.
    2. Monitor data collection to see whether unexpected issues arise.

It is essential to continually observe and verify the accuracy of the data collection process.

  • La définition des critères de collecte des données est elle essentiellement qualitatif ou quantitatif?

  • Most data collected in project monitoring are from project beneficiaries. So involving them appropriately in the process is key for MEAL success.

  • I am working for an international organization. Initially the project which I am working planned to collect data using tablets. Data collection system tools was designed in an ODK system. Our data collectors were AI technicians. Most of them had no previous experience to such technology. Apart from this, most of them had no smart phones. They can understand only local languages but the tools prepared in English language. We trained significant number of AI technicians to collect their performance data through tablets using the ODK system. Access to internet service was another major challenge during data collection. It was very intermittent and sometimes off for months. Finally we failed to collect the required data both in quality and quantity.

  • Data collection is very important in an M&E process. The information we collect must coreespond to what we need, Also it is important to understand our users and their realities before designing data collection tool

  • Right, the users caracters must be unterstood in order to evoid designing bad data collection tool which not correspond to what we need

  • I think that it's not relevant to use tools that people will have difficulties to use.we must know our target. we must first ensure that the people from whom we collect the data are literate or sensitive to certain types of questions. if this is not done there is a risk of skewing the collection.

  • Sometimes we thought that all beneficiaries or users of our monitoring activities is the same but actually different group have different backgrounds. As monitoring team, we need to understand and get to know our users so we can collect collective good data.

  • aids must not constitute a danger

  • Yes. before collecting the data, its very important to know who you are you collecting data? Why you are collecting data? their background which methods they prefered to do. Because if we have no idea about who are you collecting data then our data will failed.

  • Understanding your users is all about creating the research to fits their life. This include incorporating techniques that permit the researcher to progress in research while valuing the participants norms and tradition.

  • Understanding our users is very important. Especially on the language issue and their access to different types of technologies like mobile phones and email among others.

  • Usually, some of the information, provided that the focus is on the areas where the refuse,
including, age, disclosure of information they suspect,
may be taken, action indicating the inclusion, date of birth, and whether the information is protected.

  • Understanding your users can help you to anticipate and avoid many problems by learning about the group of people from whom you will be gathering data.

  • In my country for instance looking at an elderly in the eyes is considered as a sign of disrespect by contrast considered in some counries as someone lying.Understanding those values and cultures is really important to make data accurate.

  • I APPRECIATE THE TOPIC WAS NICE

  • Stakeholders are the people that are affected by our project and you need to understand your participants before choosing data collection methods.

  • Understanding your users from whom you are gathering information from is very crucial as it informs the approach taken in designing the tools of data collection. Data collection is very sensitive on the nature of the participants including ; age, literacy levels, ethnic background etc. when this factors are put into consideration, issues arising during data collection will be minimal

  • A que olhar por varios pontos

  • During data collection process it is important to understand your users. What kind of data they need, why they need them and at what frequency do they need them. This will help to collect the useful data.
