  • M&E Case Study Job interview exercise examples

    Background

Teff is one of the most important staple crops for small-scale farmers in Ethiopia. Although millions of farmers across Ethiopia plant teff each year, there is a surprising lack of data on optimal planting practices. XYZ is partnering with government research institutes to conduct field trials (with regular farmers) over the next several years to determine what these optimal planting practices are.

The results from these trials could result in significant changes to extension materials and the planting method promoted by the government. To have such a sweeping impact, we need to make sure we effectively design and execute the trial. For the purposes of this exercise, assume you are tasked with designing and implementing these trials. Assume we want to work in 40 communities and enroll 100 farmers in each community to participate in the trial. We will provide the teff seed and planting tools. Farmers are responsible for buying their own fertilizer.

    Deliverables

    1. Action Plan – please create a detailed, weekly calendar for this trial. Assume the only thing

which has been completed is agreeing with the research center which planting methods to test. We have three months until the start of planting. Your action plan should start now and continue through harvesting. A few notes for your reference:

    a. Staff – assume we have local managers available to work on this, but we need to hire

    one field officer per community.

    b. Details are Good – please try to include all key components of the trial, including

    logistics and materials creation.

    1. M&E Plan – please create a short overview of how we would measure the results of this trial.

You should identify specific metrics we would want to collect data on.
