  • Monitoring and evaluations enables an organization to keep track of the project activities.
    With the data collected through monitoring the organization is able to see whether the project activities were able to achieve the project objectives.
    The data collected through monitoring helps the organization to make any changes and improvements for the next phase of the project.
    Monitoring and evaluation helps to know whether the changes in outcome can be directly linked to the project's intervention.

  • M&E is very important for project to achieve its targets and goals.

  • A great start on the difference between a project with an M&E plan and one without!

  • The importance of monitoring and evaluation is to observe how the project is proceeding comparing to the stated goals. And showing out the possible advantages and dis advantages of the project

  • Monitoring and evaluation is important because:

    • list itemit provides the only consolidated source of information showcasing project progress;

    • list itemit allows actors to learn from each other’s experiences, building on expertise and knowledge;

    • list itemit often generates (written) reports that contribute to transparency and accountability, and allows for lessons to be shared more easily;

    • list itemit reveals mistakes and offers paths for learning and improvements;

    • list itemit provides a basis for questioning and testing assumptions;

    • list itemit provides a means for agencies seeking to learn from their experiences and to incorporate them into policy and practice;

    • list itemit provides a way to assess the crucial link between implementers and beneficiaries on the ground and decision-makers;

    • list itemit adds to the retention and development of institutional memory;

    • list itemit provides a more robust basis for raising funds and influencing policy.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation is a field getting more and more relevant and important in all fields of life. M&E not only helps an organization in tracking the progress and making calculated decisions but it also helps in making all the stakeholders accountable for the work they have done for the organization.

  • M&E makes it possible to better frame a project and follow it in its entirety, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises at the end of the project and even if there were some that could be remedied.

  • does MEH have any timeline to complete this project ?

  • M&E is important in that it enables to measure progress of project and if there is any problem it is detected early such that correction of problem or changes in project are not costly and detrimental as they are detected early

  • M&E is important to identify the gaps in the implementation of the project and help us to take corrective measures before failure is occurred. It will also help to measure our performance and to look for alternative measures that will help us improve the performance of the project and its impact.

  • firstly the MEH needs to have a targeted aims and goals on who are their beneficiaries
    they need so sources for their beneficiaries of the project
    make awearence to the targeted beneficiaries and let them know about the importance of the project
    get them registered or enroll them for the loan
    there is need for follow on the beneficiaries if the loan given to them was helpful
    and with that the M&E officer can trace where the gap are or whether the project actually impact the ladies

  • The importance of M and E helps in telling us is the project achieving its intended objective. Is it still on track and how has it benefited the indeed target group

    1. measure the project progress
    2. track the performance overtime
    3. help to know the efficient use of the resources
  • Monitoring helps to keep either daily, weekly or monthly check of your project to see hoe you are doing. evaluation on the other hand helps to compare your original plan with what your have done and asses how successful your have been.
    A good M&E practice helps us to be aware of our biases set them aside by collecting true unbiased information.
    it helps to to delegate roles and responsibilities to members there everyone is well informed of what to do
    Monitoring helps to track performance
    it helps to make informed decisions at the effectiveness of the project and the efficient use of resources

  • The importance of an M&E plan is often overlooked especially in small NGOs. A plan is needed to measure the success of the project and to help the team stay focused on the core aspect of the project.
    The evaluation aspect comes handy when wanting to expand the scope of the project.

  • Monitoring and evaluation helps with identifying the most valuable and efficient use of resources. Monitoring and Evaluation provides a way to assess the crucial link between implementers and beneficiaries on the ground and decision-makers; it adds to the retention and development of institutional memory; it provides a more robust basis for raising funds and influencing policy. Monitoring and evaluation together provide the necessary data to guide strategic planning, to design and implement programmes and projects, and to allocate, and re-allocate resources in better ways.

  • I agree on the importance of M&E.

  • M&e is important in enhancing decision making in an organization.
    It helps track performance of the project interns of baseline,midline and endline stages of project.
    M&e helps in budget making
    Its also necessary in planning,hiring anfld acquisition of staff.

  • This is a very interesting topic because across Africa, only 20 percent of families have formal bank accounts, according to a World Bank survey. According to a report by Oxford Business Group, about 23.5% of the people in South Africa are out of the system, while R12bn ($1.04bn) in cash is believed to be held outside of banks. Micro loans help low-income households to stabilize their income flows and save for future needs. This is a perfect case to work on. I am looking forward to learning more about MEH.

  • Monitoring and evaluation are critical for building a strong, global evidence base around violence against women and for assessing the wide, diverse range of interventions being implemented to address it. At the global level, it is a tool for identifying and documenting successful programme and approaches and tracking progress toward common indicators across related projects. Monitoring and evaluation forms the basis of strengthening understanding around the many multi-layered factors underlying violence against women, women’s experiences with such violence, and the effectiveness of the response at the service provider, community, national and international level.
    This is critically important because while the global evidence base on the proportion of women having ever experienced various forms of abuse is strong, evidence on what kinds of strategies is effective in preventing such violence and offering adequate support to victims and survivors is still weak. This is especially relevant in resource poor areas, where difficult decisions need to be made with respect to funding priorities.
    At the programme level, the purpose of monitoring and evaluation is to track implementation and outputs systematically, and measure the effectiveness of programme. It helps determine exactly when a programme is on track and when changes may be needed. Monitoring and evaluation forms the basis for modification of interventions and assessing the quality of activities being conducted.
    Monitoring and evaluation can be used to demonstrate that programme efforts have had a measurable impact on expected outcomes and have been implemented effectively. It is essential in helping managers, planners, implementers, policy makers and donors acquire the information and understanding they need to make informed decisions about programme operations.

  • Monitoring and evaluation is important because:

    • it allows actors to learn from each other’s experiences, building on expertise and knowledge;

    • it adds to the retention and development of institutional memory;
    • it provides a more robust basis for raising funds and influencing policy.

  • Monitoring and evaluation are essential to any project or program. Through this process, organizations collect and analyze data, and determine if a project/program has fulfilled its goals. Monitoring begins right away and extends through the duration of the project. Evaluation comes after and assesses how well the program performed. Every organization should have an M&E system in place. Here are ten reasons why:
    M&E results in better transparency and accountability
    Because organizations track, analyze, and report on a project during the monitoring phase, there’s more transparency. Information is freely circulated and available to stakeholders, which gives them more input on the project. A good monitoring system ensures no one is left in the dark. This transparency leads to better accountability. With information so available, organizations need to keep everything above board. It’s also much harder to deceive stakeholders.
    M&E helps organizations catch problems early
    Projects never go perfectly according to plan, but a well-designed M&E helps the project stay on track and perform well. M&E plans help define a project’s scope, establish interventions when things go wrong, and give everyone an idea of how those interventions affect the rest of the project. This way, when problems inevitably arise, a quick and effective solution can be implemented.
    M&E helps ensure resources are used efficiently
    Every project needs resources. How much cash is on hand determines things like how many people work on a project, the project’s scope, and what solutions are available if things get off course. The information collected through monitoring reveals gaps or issues, which require resources to address. Without M&E, it wouldn’t be clear what areas need to be a priority. Resources could easily be wasted in one area that isn’t the source of the issue. Monitoring and evaluation helps prevent that waste.
    M&E helps organizations learn from their mistakes
    Mistakes and failures are part of every organization. M&E provides a detailed blueprint of everything that went right and everything that went wrong during a project. Thorough M&E documents allow organizations to pinpoint specific failures, as opposed to just guessing what caused problems. Often, organizations can learn more from their mistakes than from their successes.
    M&E improves decision-making
    Data should drive decisions. M&E processes provide the essential information needed to see the big picture. After a project wraps up, an organization with good M&E can identify mistakes, successes, and things that can be adapted and replicated for future projects. Decision-making is then influenced by what was learned through past monitoring and evaluation.
    M&E helps organizations stay organized
    Developing a good M&E plan requires a lot of organization. That process in itself is very helpful to an organization. It has to develop methods to collect, distribute, and analyze information. Developing M&E plans also requires organizations to decide on desired outcomes, how to measure success, and how to adapt as the project goes on, so those outcomes become a reality. Good organizational skills benefit every area of an organization.
    M&E helps organizations replicate the best projects/programs
    Organizations don’t like to waste time on projects or programs that go nowhere or fail to meet certain standards. The benefits of M&E that we’ve described above – such as catching problems early, good resource management, and informed decisions – all result in information that ensures organizations replicate what’s working and let go of what’s not.
    M&E encourages innovation
    Monitoring and evaluation can help fuel innovative thinking and methods for data collection. While some fields require specific methods, others are open to more unique ideas. As an example, fields that have traditionally relied on standardized tools like questionnaires, focus groups, interviews, and so on can branch out to video and photo documentation, storytelling, and even fine arts. Innovative tools provide new perspectives on data and new ways to measure success.
    M&E encourages diversity of thought and opinions
    With monitoring and evaluation, the more information the better. Every team member offers an important perspective on how a project or program is doing. Encouraging diversity of thought and exploring new ways of obtaining feedback enhance the benefits of M&E. With M&E tools like surveys, they’re only truly useful if they include a wide range of people and responses. In good monitoring and evaluation plans, all voices are important.
    Every organization benefit from M&E
    While certain organizations can use more unique M&E tools, all organizations need some kind of monitoring and evaluation system. Whether it’s a small business, corporation, or government agency, all organizations need a way to monitor their projects and determine if they’re successful. Without strong M&E, organizations aren’t sustainable, they’re more vulnerable to failure, and they can lose the trust of stakeholders.

  • Government’s major challenge is to become more effective. M&E
    processes can assist the public sector in evaluating its performance
    and identifying the factors which contribute to its service
    delivery outcomes. M&E is uniquely oriented towards providing
    its users with the ability to draw causal connections between the
    choice of policy priorities, the resourcing of those policy objectives,
    the programmes designed to implement them, the services actually
    delivered and their ultimate impact on communities. M&E helps to
    provide an evidence base for public resource allocation decisions
    and helps identify how challenges should be addressed and
    successes replicated.
    Monitoring and evaluation is, however, extremely complex, multi-
    disciplinary and skill intensive. Government-wide monitoring and
    evaluation even more so, since it requires detailed knowledge
    both across and within sectors, and interactions between planning,
    budgeting and implementation. The picture is complicated even
    further when the machinery of government is decentralised, with
    powers and functions being distributed across three spheres of
    government. It is precisely this complicated intergovernmental
    structure with diffused powers and functions which requires strong
    M&E systems to promote coordination and prevent fragmentation.

  • Ensure an appropriate monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system is in place and is functioning satisfactorily. Periodically review and revise the system so that it is adapted appropriately to changing operating contexts.
    Ensure relevant and timely M&E information is provided in user-friendly formats to key stakeholders, including beneficiary communities, CARE senior management and donors.
    Provide training and mentoring for CO staff.
    Act as a focal point to organise and manage monitoring reviews, evaluations and/or After Action Reviews (AARs).

  • Enhancing the chance that the initiative's goals and objectives are being achieved
    Determining value for money (i.e., allocated resources are yielding the greatest benefit for clients and stakeholders)
    Identifying what components of an initiative work/do not work and why
    Identifying areas that need improvement in order to provide the best service possible

  • Monitoring and Evaluation helps with the identification of the most valuable and efficient use of resources. It provides necessary data to guide strategic planning to design and implement programmes and projects, and allocate and re-allocate resources in better ways. It often generates written reports that contribute to transparency and accountability and also allows for lessons to be shared easily.

  • M&E is important because it provides data to guide strategic planning and allocation of resources. It can also guide the design and implementation of appropriate programmes and projects.

  • M&E is an important and a piller for any project that informs how well the project is progressed

  • The importance of M&E includes the following;

    • M&E helps in assessing whether the project has achieved its set targets, for instance by monitoring the development of the project, you will easily know whether strategic changes needs to made accordingly.

    • M&E results in better transparency and accountability. This is because organizations are able to track, analyze, and report on the project progress and every stakeholder is able to acquire a copy of the information.

    • M&E helps to ensure resources are used efficiently. For example how much cash is on hand determines things like how many people work on the project, the project scope and what solutions are available if things get off plan.

    • M&E helps organizations learn from their mistakes. For example, M&E provides detailed blue print of everything that went right and wrong during the project

    • M&E helps improve on decision making. For example after project wrap up, an organization with good M&E can identify mistakes, Successes, and things that can be adapted for future projects.

    • Helps organizations to stay organized. Developing M&E plans also requires organizations to decide on desired outcomes, how to measure success and how to adapt as the project goes on

    • Helps organizations catch problems early. M&E defines project scope, establish interventions when things go wrong and gives everyone the idea of how those interventions affect the rest of the project.

  • This is a fantastic way to learn, by complete involvement in the process of developing and M&E framework

  • The Importance of Monitoring and Evaluation:

    Monitoring is the process of collecting and reporting the data which will be used to implement the projects and for the purposes of evaluation. In the example cases given above about GOOD and MEH give us a clear idea about why GOOD is succesful with the results because they had a clear monitoring plan, whereas MEH did not have an idea about how to collect the data, therefore they did not consider the importance of the monitoring which will effect the results that they are supposed to measure in order to evaluate the success or failure of their program. However, because they do not have a baseline (which is the finding of monitoring , hence we know what to measure) , they can not evaluate the results. Very basically, monitoring is the strongest brick that we have to put at first, before implementation and we need to support it with more bricks (during the implementation with mid-term and final monitoring results). Therefore, we can have a clear evaluation and clear understanding of if the program was succesful, what was missing, what can be added or transformed in order to make it work for the coming projects.

  • The need for a monitoring and evaluation plan in a project design can not be overemphasized

  • I believe for MEH, the greater objective will be to improve the lives of these girls and just giving them the loans without ensuring that the make meaningful investments with their loans would defeat the entire purpose of the scheme.

  • This log frame is going to help me improve my M&E skills

  • The M&E is a very important to monitor and evaluate the work being done.
    Through the Monitoring there is adaily monitoring of key indicators following the evaluation plan

  • You are much right.
    I also belive we can use M&E in our daily lives even in matters concerning our families

  • This is a very clear overview of what M&E is.

  • M&E provides a detailed blueprint of everything that went right and everything that went wrong during a project. Thorough M&E documents allow organizations to pinpoint specific failures, as opposed to just guessing what caused problems. Often, organizations can learn more from their mistakes than from their successes.

  • At the programme level, the purpose of monitoring and evaluation is to track implementation and outputs systematically, and measure the effectiveness of programmes. It helps determine exactly when a programme is on track and when changes may be needed.

  • Due to the two different Projects showed above, M&E has more significance on running projects Such as;

    1. It measures the progress of a project
    2. It shows the plans for collected information
    3. It helps to show how project can be improved
    4. Has the ability to track or catch the problem and hence making the necessary changes.
    5. It shows the successfulness of the project
    • Well-designed M&E helps the project stay on track and perform well. It also help define a project’s scope, establish interventions when things go wrong.

    M&E guides project implementers in ensuring that projects and Programmes are undertaken within the budget. How much financing a project has will determine things like how many people will work on a project, the project’s scope, and what solutions will be available if things get off course.

    M&E processes provide the essential information needed to clearly see the state of a project. After a project wraps up, an organization with good M&E can identify mistakes, successes, and things that can be adapted and replicated for future projects.

    Organizations track, analyze, and report on a project during the monitoring stage, hence there’s more transparency. Information is freely circulated and available to stakeholders, which gives them more input on the project

  • Wow, very insightful. Definitely M&E is critical if a project is to be successfully implemented. It allows early detection of errors and diversions from the plan.

  • What exactly is the main target of the two projects? to help alleviate poverty among the girls? to introduce them to modern banking? or to provide money for them to start up businesses? i can't really capture the central focus here.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation is important to assess if the projects successfully achieved its desired impact.

  • Looking forward to Module 1

  • MEH people can start measuring how many loans they give, how many businesses they helped to start and how many are functioning....
    By doing the data collection that how many girls are eligible to take loan, how many businesses started and how many are functioning..........alll these will give numbers as a part of monitoring as well as shows progress of the project. some might be negative due to risk and. in progressive monitoring we can see the root cause of negative. all together will supportive in evaluation of the project in specific period, and by the way will help to focus on the root cause. So M&E is very important for a project.

    Monitoring and evaluation together helps in making guidance for strategic planning, designing of a project. it also supports by providing adequate inputs to allocate and reallocate resources in better way for a productive activity which in turn will add value to input and out put

  • GOOD knows what it really wants to achieve and how to get there.

  • My submission will be that as each project is specific, there is need for a specific M&E plan for a specific project

  • Since businesses are of different sizes, MEH can categorise the business as either Small, Medium and Large as defined either by number of people employed or the business'financial worthy. Then in each category track numbers who get the loans. This assist on whether MEH has "affected" which business category

  • Monitoring and evaluation is an important element of every organisation and it's essential for the success of projects, programmes and projects.

  • True, and this allows easy tracking of progress

  • Each project has its demands, dynamics and evaluation system and processes. Its therefore important to treat every project unique regardless of the fact that some projects may be similar but just by having a different stakeholders, different funding and different time frame all makes these projects different

  • But how can monitoring be used to improve funding of projects

  • M&E is a very important aspect of each and every project. It enables the project manager and it stake holders to fully understand and know if the goals of the of the project are being met in their entirety. Monitoring is also essential when it comes to use of resources, it helps shed light on how resources are being used during the course of the project. M&E also helps decision makers to make sound decisions based on the information that they at hand.

  • Picture this scenario:
    Lets say government has commenced a 3 year project to provide inputs e.g. Fertilizer to farmers in order to improve their yields. Each farmer receives a bag of fertilizer every year regardless of how big his/her land is. Now after the fertilizer has been used during the first year and the M&E team does an assessment on the progress, they realize that the inputs are not adequate for the farmers to attain the ultimate goal of ''Improving yields''. This would enable the M&E team to write a report to the donors so that a decision is made pertaining to the inputs given

  • Monitoring and evaluation helps in tracking the progress of the project and enables you to see if the set goals have been realised and if there needs to be improvement in the future projects

  • Project Assumptions: pAt some point in your life, you’ve probably been told, “Never make assumptions.” However, making assumptions in project management is an everyday activity. Assumptions help you define scope and risks and fine-tune your estimates for time and cost. Of course, it is essential to document and validate your assumptions.
    Consider something simple, such as creating a book. Let’s say your friend has an idea for a coffee table book and has asked you to manage the project. His first request is for a budget so he can secure funding. As you define the scope, it’s clear that your friend is uncertain on many details, including page count, image inclusion, cover style and the weight of the paper to be used for the pages.
    Since all of these factors will impact cost and production complexity, you will have to make assumptions about the specifications and validate those assumptions as acceptable or unacceptable to your friend. After further discussion, your friend tells you he plans to include 50 photos in the book. You can base your assumption on the 50 images or, anticipating that this number will increase over time, you can make an assumption that there will be between 75-90 pages with images.
    You can see how assumptions directly affect schedule as well. For instance, imagine you’re leading a project at a park that involves building a swing set. When setting up your project, you are given the budget and assigned team members, one of whom is in charge of materials. As you create your schedule, you ask the person in charge of materials when the cement will arrive. This person replies that he’s not sure when the cement will arrive but that he believes it will be between June 1 and June 10.
    Project Risk: Once you’ve built your scope and identified the assumptions that are behind the scope and estimates, you will want to begin assessing areas of risk. Risk is the same in project management as it is in the real world; it is a hazard or chance that can create damage.

  • The MEH’s project manager should prioritize developing an M&E plan for measuring progress, tracking performance and establishing the basis to measure project success. Importantly, during monitoring, lessons learnt are important for addressing project challenges, designing and implementing improvement mechanisms while evaluating efficient use of resources.

  • Monitoring and evaluation is important because it provides the only consolidated source of information showcasing project progress and it also allows actors to learn from each other’s experiences, building on expertise and knowledge;

  • Monitoring is the way of collecting data and measuring progress.
    Evaluation is the way how collected data helps to make decisions.

  • a useful introduction to M&E concept

  • M&e allows to:
    measure the project progress, track the performance and help to know the efficient use of the resources

  • Monitoring and Evaluation is a great tool for identifying and documenting successful programmes to ensure the approaches towards the targets and outcomes are achieved. It also is instrumental in checking on the progress towards the indicators in place to feed into the overall objectives.
    Having M&E in place gives clarity on what to measure and when to get all the information. This ensures that the programme is successful in the long run.

  • it very important that module it's halow to reach my target

  • it helps organization to track progress of activities
    its helps in making informed decisions.
    it helps to know if the objectives of project is being achieved

  • -improves management
    -helps to know changes to be made to a particular project
    -helps demonstrate commitment to and competence of a project
    -helps clarify the return on investment
    -helps to improve accountability and transparency
    -helps assess the performance of projects, institutions and programmes
    -helps organizations detect problems early.

    • helps ensure resources are used efficiently and effectively.
      -helps organizations learn from their mistakes.
  • MEH will need to identify critical indicators that show the success of the project both at monitoring and evaluation level (outcomes and impact) and replicate the M&E process that GOOD is implementing. Some of the indicators may include:

    • of loans and amounts disbursed monthly and quarterly

    • of people who are direct beneficiaries/recipients of these loans

    • MEH needs to monitor the usage of the loans and interest rates for repayment should be agreed upon

    • MEH must also develop a training curriculum on managing of small businesses and train the loan recipients

    • The total number of people directly and indirectly impacted by the project should be evaluated during the mid-term and end-term of the Micro-loans project

  • This module has provided with an insight of what entails M and E plan and why they are developed.
    One key learning point for me is understanding the difference between monitoring and Evaluation, and how they relates to each other.

  • M&E provides a detailed blueprint of everything that went right and everything that went wrong during a project. Thorough M&E documents allow organizations to pinpoint specific failures, as opposed to just guessing what caused problems. Often, organizations can learn more from their mistakes than from their successes.

  • You need to follow the 5 steps.

  • M&E enables project managers to track the progress of their project through a data-driven approach and respond to ongoing project challenges on time.

  • It helps to determine progress of a project and see if targets are being made. It also supports to know if resources are being used effectively. It also alerts if there are any problems arising so that they can be prevented and sorted. Evaluation supports to know if what was planned has been achieved.

  • understanding the important of M&E by use of examples make the topic so interesting

  • The Project Manager who has already taken this M&E course is on track to measure some of the important outputs and outcomes associated with the GOOD project. Collecting this data will make reporting to donors easy and create an interesting story to present because of the high-quality data. Clearly, the M&E plan is good for the beneficiaries who will benefit from increasing project efficiencies; the M&E plan also helps the organization manage with excellence; and the GOOD project will most likely continue to receive support from donors because they have the details needed to feel secure about their investments.

    The MEH team can catch up! They can take the FHI360 course on M&E and learn to build a solid M&E plan for MEH.
    Never give up!

  • The importance of M&E will help improve the impact of foreign project.
