I am Philemon, a Kenyan, passionate and willing to learn all about Monitoring and Evaluation, the knowledge that will give me an edge in organization planning. I want to get the knowledge in depths and be able to put it into practice.

What does monitoring and evaluation mean?
a) Monitoring is the routine and systematic collection of information against a plan. The information might be about activities, products or services, users, or about outside factors affecting the organization or project.
b) Evaluation is about making judgments about the value of any component part of an organization or its products, services or benefits, or about the organization as a whole.
Note: Monitoring and Evaluation is a continuous process.
1.1 Why is monitoring and evaluation important?
Organisations use monitoring and evaluation for two key purposes:
• to learn about their own activities and results, and to support internal planning and development
• to be accountable to their stakeholders.
Organisations need evidence of their efficiency and effectiveness for funders, commissioners and investors. They also need to communicate achievements to a wider public. Charities are now specifically required by SORP to report the achievements of the charity over the year. However, the role of monitoring and evaluation in providing learning and in improving the organisation is of equal importance.
1.2 The monitoring and evaluation cycle
There are four key phases in the monitoring and evaluation cycle:
• planning for monitoring and evaluation
• monitoring
• evaluation
• using the findings to learn and improve.

I'm also a full time farmer, living in a small compact farm trying to venture into sustainable agricultural production, regenerative agriculture, and permaculture. My background has always been on agricultural extension and community development, with the hope that whatever I am able to learn through various sources, I'm able to share them to my students, co-farmers, and other rural folks. Enrolling in this course would allow me to understand how to undertake an end-to-end approach on extension works with application of pertinent planning, monitoring, and evaluation techniques and strategies.

I am particularly interested in this course of monitoring and evaluation because it provides the basics of management of a project. It also guides one to always reflect on the goals and objectives of the project. The course further guides the manager on the methods to use to achieve the set goals. It helps one to know the parameters of the project and be able to work within such parameters. Monitoring and Evaluation helps one to assess the progress of the project, after assessment, one is able to find out where there is progress and where it is not. This opens gates for one to improve and lay strategies to put the workforce back on track in case there is a mismatch with objectives. If the objectives are being followed, then a sustainability plan for the project is put in place.
