  • Hello
Do No Harm or so called non-maleficence is very important, because every project is aimed at producing results

  • In this principle, you consider more of your participants if:

    1. It is time consuming or stressful to them
I this principle ,the participant maybe busy with other important activities , therefore it is advised to ensure that it doesn't take the participant's time
    2. The participants data is kept confidential and anonymous
In this regard , you do think of participant's security in terms of his/her reputation , whether the people who are going to use or read the data will keep it without causing any harm to the participant
3.Participants give informed consent to collect and use their data
The owner must accept that his/her data can be collected and also must know what going to happen with the data collected
4.Identify and avoid areas where your data can increase the inequalities
This is to try to avoid causing and increasing the problem to the already existing ones
  • In that case you need to find ways to control the spreading of the data or information
Sometimes we need to study those that we are sharing data if they are in the same boat with you

  • Not using data for purposes that might harm other/participants. Confidentiality should be key when working with data at all times.

  • I wil comeback alowing for me to see back a real problem befor to start back.

  • I completely agree with the sensitivity of sharing data with 3rd party. It is not safe & its unethical to share the data of the beneficiary without their knowledge.

  • Sometimes donor tries to use the beneficiary data for marketing purpose which is completely not acceptable, as a social organization we need to be careful & sometimes firm while communicating this to the donor. Any organization need to have data protection policy in place.

  • These are really great points that resonate with me when it comes to how we collect and use data. I believe most of these things can be developed or put in place before the data collection. For instance, making sure that you have outlined or have a safe location to store data collected.

  • One of essential principles of the ethical behavior within monitoring and evaluating is do not harm.
Based on data obtained from gender equity awareness in the area.
After we get the data, we have to make sure the participants in this case the women in the expensive grocery store have been informed about this data collection and will use it. the women will ask about the statement "women have worse job opportunities than men". The participants should also be aware of the risks because their opinion on gender equity will be used. in addition, they must express their opinion according to their experiences. The data that has been collected must be easy to understand, simple, and intuitive. The data should also be kept anonymous and confidential to protect their privacy and protect them from any harm. The finished data is stored in a file that is not known to anyone except the owner and processor of the data.

  • more light is been thrown to the impact of wrong data collection and the extend to which it can affect the entire project, stakeholders, and participants.

  • This is a very important part in data collection. People's reputation must be guided at all times; hence, most times, it is advisable to keep reports on anonymous and confidentiality.

  • Everything is fine! The course is positive

  • Data in most cases represents human being. The way we collect data and how it is used have a huge effect on the people we collect this informations from positively or negatively.

Confidentiality: the privacy of the individuals supplying this information must be handled with care. In my project in planning for monitoring and evaluation, It was screening for hepatitis B virus on young women at the age 17 to 20 . Imagine if a man sent his wife to participate and it appears that his wife has lied about her age.
What if after testing the wife for hepatitis B and she turns out positive.
The question is, what happens next. Should the husband be told his wife true age and hepatitis B status??

It calls for proper education for those collecting, collating , storing and analysing data on the need to handle data as a classified and sensitive material

  • The Do No Harm principle instructs us to actively avoid causing damage.Honor the dignity, well-being, and self-worth of individuals. Do not, intentionally or unintentionally, cause physical, emotional or reputational damage to the people affected by your work.

So, how can you ensure that your M&E practices cause no harm to participants, stakeholders or other people?

1.Consider the experience of your participants.

Think about the people from whom you are collecting data. What is the experience of providing data like? Is it stressful and confusing or simple and intuitive? Is it time-consuming or efficient?

2.Ensure that all participants give informed consent to collect and use their data.

In the past, many people have participated in studies without understanding the risks involved. As a result, these people have suffered. This is why it is so important to ensure that the people you are collecting data from understand exactly what they are agreeing to participate in.

3.Ensure that, when appropriate, participant data is kept anonymous and confidential.

Data is anonymous if it cannot be linked back to the individual who provided it. Data is confidential if it can only be accessed by those who have permission.
Often, when we collect information from individuals, we promise that the data will be kept anonymous and confidential. This helps us collect information about topics that people might otherwise not want to discuss.
It is extremely important that we keep these promise.

4.Identify and avoid potential areas where your data may exacerbate existing inequities.

Even if you are extremely careful about collecting and presenting accurate data without any prejudice, there is no guarantee that the people who read about your data will be so careful. This is why you should always consider how others might use your data. Could it be used to cause harm to others?

  • It is very important to treat people well.Do not cause any harm that might affect their reputation.
Make people feel important no matter who they are.

  • perfectlty weel natarated on the data collection

  • It will have a negative impact on the group also affecting there self esteem. The government will direct all crimes committed in the community to this group because of the report.

  • For collecting data or using data, we need to be more aware that we should not harm others from whom we are collecting data for our professional need.

  • Do No Harm should focus on the well being of an individual and not to cause harm whether intentionally or unintentionally to the people affected by your work

  • Do not do any type of harm to an individual whether it is intentional or unintentional

  • How will you know that the data collected will be safe .

  • r communities where we helps people leaving with HIV and AIDS so information collected should be confidential .

  • Being professional in the trade, from data collection to processing and analysis, and in work ethics, no identified person is identified in a study report.

  • Do No Harm is crucial principal especially in the world of today where people tend to use other people's information to benefit themselves. Less privilege people in the society are the one who are mostly affected.

  • Well in such situation someone has to admit that releasing such information directly affect the group of people being represented because key information release about the situational relationship about the political groups are release and can be trace back to identify the group of people provide such information easily. so such information should be provided and shred with such kind of cautious.

  • The study has really broaden my knowldge on M&E Ethics. Thanks for putting the together

  • I do understand respecting the dignity and safety of human being is a key ethical issue in any research and evaluation activities.

  • Yes, it is very important to keep the anonymity of study participants.

  • I am also of the opinion that release of sensitive data such as political affiliations of sections and regions could lead to harm by unsuspecting individuals most especially politicians.

  • Do no harm - Its every import to place yourself in the place of your respondents or community you are collecting your data from. we should learn to see issues from the perspectives of those we in tend to help improve their lives.

Very Very important seek consent before collecting data, ensure anonymity clause protects the respondent.

  • Do No Harm is very vital in monitoring and Evaluation simply because it protects the reputation of the members of the society and that of the organisation operating in that particular society

  • Basically, the principle of honesty in M&E can be ensured by

    • presenting accurate data

    • accurately representing data

    • being honest about possible limitations in collecting data

    • reporting any conflict of interest.

  • This is really interesting. I have learnt something that i had never considered before.

  • I think it is most and mandatory thing to consider while collecting data.

  • DO NO HARM
This is one of the ethical principle which must be adhered to when collecting data.
It is very important that the data you are collecting should not infringe on the rights of the people in terms of their sexual, age, education and political alignments.

  • Do no harm to me means as an M&E expert you have to understand the data collected can be harmful to the person’s character

  • Do not, intentionally or unintentionally, cause physical, emotional or reputational damage to the people affected by your work.
Unless you are careful, your M&E processes have the potential to cause enormous harm. The Do No Harm principle instructs us to actively avoid causing damage. Even if you are extremely careful about collecting and presenting accurate data without any prejudice, there is no guarantee that the people who read about your data will be so careful. This is why you should always consider how others might use your data. Could it be used to cause harm to others? Often, when we collect information from individuals, we promise that the data will be kept anonymous and confidential. This helps us collect information about topics that people might otherwise not want to discuss.

It is extremely important that we keep these promises.

Releasing highly sensitive information, such as health, sexual or political information, can damage an individual’s reputation or safety. Even information that may not seem sensitive, such as addresses or ages, can cause harm if it is released. Imagine, for example, that you release the names and addresses of your beneficiaries. Individuals who might want to harm your beneficiaries could use your data to locate them.

  • Often, when we collect information from individuals, we promise that the data will be kept anonymous and confidential. This helps us collect information about topics that people might otherwise not want to discuss.

  • When collecting data you have to ensure that the stakeholders and personal information is stored safely and remains personal

  • To do no harm to my participants and stakeholders in the process of data collection

  • This principle is the most fundamental principle. It has a legal foundation in the international legal frameworks of humanitarian action and development aid .

  • Ensuring a win win situation can best explain do no harm

  • I think that the data or the theme of the information to be collected relates to the perception of wages and the prices of basic necessities in the market. it is a question of seeing the cost of living, and the shopping basket for an average household

  • Ethics in data collection is particularly important when collecting data in rural areas where most of the people are often not well educated. Data collectors should find ways to clearly explain why they are collecting data and how it will be use. The people should be convinced to provide information after fully understanding the purpose of the data collection and how it will be use.

  • Data needs to be protected by all means. Make sure even if your data do goes out it does not harm the next person who are less priviledged. Data needs to be accurate and manageable, easily accessible.

  • this topic has been helpful and I really now understand that when collecting data we have to look at all possible angles of possible harm meaning everything should be put into consideration

  • i also think that the do no harm principles mainly focuses on the participants from whom your collecting data

  • 'Do Not Harm' is the first key ethical principle. We must honor the self-worth of all individuals. The risk of harming them emotionally, physically, or impacting their reputation is high. Foremost, we must think what the respondents experience when responding to our questions. Are questions too long and complex, or simple and clear? Their possible reaction when going through our questions. Secondly, we should receive their informed consent on our data collection and it's usage. All respondents must acknowledge that they fully understand how the data will be used. Thirdly, the information should be kept confidential and anonymous. We must keep our promise to not not disclose the respondent identity. Lastly, is to make sure the collected data do not cause any safety or other trouble for our participants.

  • Ne pas nuire est la première étape dans le processus d'administration des outils de collecte des données

  • Ethics, like anything related to morality, is really not a simple subject. It is very important for anyone undertaking a project to look into the ethical considerations very seriously.
“Do No Harm” is one of the ethical considerations that we should look into when implementing our projects. This ethical consideration says that we should honor the dignity, well-being, and self-worth of individuals. We should not, intentionally or unintentionally, cause physical, emotional or reputational damage to the people affected by your work.
This can be done by considering the experience of our participants. It is important to consider the experience of participants providing the data. Ensure that all participants give informed consent to collect and use their data. Here every participant should be told openly of how the project will be operated and how the data will be used. From the explanations given, a participant has to decide to give consent having understood what the project is all about. Another thing is that we should ensure that, when appropriate, participant data is kept anonymous and confidential. This means that all data should be kept in a way that people should not be able to trace to the participants and also that the place it is kept is not accessible to people wo can use the data with other inappropriate intentions. Lastly, identifying and avoiding potential areas where your data may exacerbate existing inequities is also important to be put into consideration. We should always be careful thinking on how others might use the data for

  • My organization would ensure that all data collected would be kept confidential and would not be time consuming or stressful to the participants taking part, also the group of people that we would be focusing on would be those that would gain by our survey so it would not be bias.

  • Ethics is fundamental to data collection. When the participants feel unsafe or uncomfortable with the whole process, it is almost certain that the data collector might not get an accurate and reliable data. This would in turn hamper the whole process leading to a waste of time, resources and energy. This module is really an eye opener!

  • We need to be sensitive with data, it can be in some cases used to cause harm to intended beneficiaries

  • Data specialists should make sure data is very managed to prevent any eventuality of data linkage, especially in very sensitive contexts.

  • The Do No Harm principle is something to keep an eye on always, as you might not just notice how you or members of your organization have violated it. While some may be very obvious, like prolonged interviews that weigh heavily on the times of respondents; others may be very less obvious, such as discussing project activities or beneficiaries with family members or friends who do not need to have the information.

  • According to my understanding l believe that is it worth to respect the rights of all the participants in all the processes and activities when it comes to data

    1. When we do so, we are assured that when an activity is being conducted once ones rights are recognized trust and respect is build between the participants.

    2. Good communication is initiated which in the end it creates good understanding.

    3. Creates a sense of privacy.

  • How can you guarantee that your monitoring and evaluation procedures do not hurt participants, stakeholders, or other people?
    Consider your participants' backgrounds.
Consider the folks from whom you are gathering data. How was your experience supplying data? Is it stressful and perplexing, or easy and straightforward? Is it time-consuming or productive?
Unfortunately, companies all too often create data collecting methods that are overly big, time-consuming, or unpleasant.
Academic testing is a frequent example of this phenomena. Many educational systems throughout the world have introduced standardized assessments in order to determine if academic programs are effective. However, as the length and quantity of these assessments have increased, some individuals have expressed concern that children are now spending much too much time preparing for them. Ascertain that all participants provide informed consent for the collection and use of their data.
Many people have previously participated in research without fully comprehending the hazards involved. As a result, these individuals have suffered.
This is why it is critical to ensure that the people whose data you are collecting understand exactly what they are committing to engage in.
Depending on the type of data you gather, there may be certain rules or regulations with which you must comply. When doing medical research or working with vulnerable groups such as children, inmates, or the intellectually impaired, the rules for getting informed permission might be very complicated.

  • This module has been so interesting. I have understood another dimension of ethics, which relates to the use of data not just by the owner, but also the third party involved.

  • In planning and implementing its primary data collection and fieldwork, organization should be committed to do no harm. This means that the security, safety, integrity and wellbeing of participants, enumerators, partners and researchers are paramount and that the basic human rights of individuals and groups with whom its staff, sub-contractors and representatives interact when collecting primary data or conducting fieldwork are respected and protected.

  • Honor the dignity and well-being of people. Do not intentionally or unintentionally cause physical, emotional or reputation damage to people affected by your work. This can be achieved in your M&E practice by; considering the experience of your participants, Ensuring that all participants give informed consent to collect and use data, ensuring that when appropriate, participant data is kept anonymous and confidential and avoiding potential areas where your data exacerbate existing inequities.

  • We need to make sure that our M&E processes and data will not be used to harm others

  • Observing the principle of 'Do No Harm' in the collection and use of data is sometimes challenging in circumstances where funders have a long list of indicators to measure the performance of the program or project. Program or project implementors face a dilemma in terms of deciding the right amount of data to gather to ascertain that funders' performance indicators are measured, but not subjecting project/program participants to a lengthy and tedious process of answering questions to surveys or interviews.

  • I think it is critical especially when working in a diverse group where English is not the dominant language to ensure that the participants understand the data collection process and its usage well. When educating youth on doing interviews/ data collection I often advise that "consent" is very different from "informed consent", and that the participant has to comprehend how the data collected will be used this assures that they are not put at risk latter on.

The last example in identifying and avoiding potential areas where your data may exacerbate existing inequities example helped enhanced my understand the importance of data management.

  • This is really one of the important ethical principles which has to be considered at all time, especially in today's age of social media. There have been numerous cases where people's reputation, safely and dignity have been seriously endangered and damaged after some sensitive information that they shared with someone in confidence found its way to the social media. Much as it is not easy to be 100 percent sure the information will not be leaked, we must ensure that we do our very best to safeguard the data used in our M&E for the safety of our participants.

  • Sounds similar to some components of the Human Subjects Protection training essential for all research health care workers. It is interesting to know that M&E considers it too and I cant wait to relate the two in my organization.

  • I think when research participants are informed of the good intentions of the project and the desire to do no harm to them, they participate enthusiastically.

  • It is very crucial to observe data ethics during data collection. The data collected should not cause any harm to the beneficiaries, either physical or emotional. Before collecting data the data collection team should first consider the experience of their participants, ensure that all participants give informed consent to collect data and use their data, ensure when appropriate participant data is kept anonymous and confidential and also identify and avoid potential potential areas where your data may exacerbate existing inequities.

  • It is important to keep good communication and be open with the team so that they can have confidence in you as an M and E. if they are open and confident in your, it will not be a challenge to get their concern in collecting data.
It is important to keep data confidential because participants trusted you with their personal information.
Data must the clear to the receiver and ensure the way it is presented it will not course harm to participant and decides not to participate in the program going forward.

  • very interesting

  • don not harms simply means , keep peopl,s reputation and mentaly , keeen their privacy and confedtiality

  • Those that are giving out information which comes in form of information sometimes don't oblige to giving out information especially in an environment that the level of education is very low. They most times believe that if they give out information, those information can be used against them. It simply means lots of work needs serious to be done in such areas before data are collected.

  • "Do no harm" as one of the 3 principles of ethical behavior is an integral part of data collection and M&E in general. it should be well treated so that every responded can feel safe and equally treated. prejudice and discrimination should be strongly avoided.

  • Yes, it is important to do work in a form and manual that will not harm anybody that is measure in your data collection, and I have learned to do just that from this topic "Do No Harm".

  • the concept of do no harm is critical indeed. at the end of the day the researcher wants to collect data to help him/her in their research. thus it is very key to ensure we put the safety and comfort our participants at the top of our list. by creating a safe environment to conduct our M&E activities, gives room to our participants to provide the most useful information; which would also benefit the research and other stakeholders.

  • The data collection maybe done to give solutions at the end of the projects so the Do No Harm must be prioritize so that no one will be affected in a bad way at the end of the projects. And some people or resources maybe reused for other projects so it very important to keep them safe all the times. Confidential information is also important at all times

  • Consider the experience of your participants.

Think about the people from whom you are collecting data. What is the experience of providing data like? Is it stressful and confusing or simple and intuitive? Is it time-consuming or efficient?

Unfortunately, all too often, organizations design data collection processes that are too large, time-consuming or stressful.

    Honesty
Give the fact not the opinions when collecting data to give a true story. It is import that you don't write what u think is right but write only the confirmed fact from collated data. Honestly can save you from many trouble.
    Competence
I see the importance of using right people at a right project, it is important that people with professional skills are used in the right project to give a accurate result. The training should be provided if needed.

  • Learning about the Do No Harm principle is so key and helpful for a M&E person who is out there collecting any form of data.

  • Yes it could be used to damage their reputation because the politicians are actually against them.

  • how can you ensure that your M&E practices cause no harm to participants, stakeholders or other people?

Best experience, Good format of data collection method and keep data quality

  • do no harm is one of the important principles in M&E and must be considered seriously in every phase of it.

  • As you conduct a research, it is important to maximize benefits while minimizing the risks.

  • We definitely need to be careful with the Do No Harm policy/norm; specially wehen collecting data. It doesn't mean that we are going to be able to avoid every kind of conflict or harm at all costs; it means that while we can mitigate harm, we will be able to partially eliminate risks. These principle should be very well known and considered by technical teams accompanying M&E processes.

  • As you take this introductory M&E course, you may be introduced to new processes and tools. You may be tempted to rush out and try these exciting new ideas right away. We encourage you to pause and reflect before you do so. Does your team have the skills required to carry out this new process?
