497bea71-b1e8-4118-92e2-e2c68d598c62-image.png HI! My name is Ken and I'm joining from Kokopo on the Island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea where I work for a faith based organisation as a volunteer project administrator/manager. I'm looking forward to gaining insight on social impact projects so I can help my organisation become an effective agent for community development. I am looking forward to being part of a learning team so that I can learn from interaction with others and also be able to assist with my experience in the civil and building construction fields where I started off as a accounts and administration person. I'm also completing a Public Poly Management Degree programme in the coming year and hope to improve myself so I can offer value to the teams I work with for real impact in quality of life.

Welcome to the forum.we will learn a lot by working together.

    1. My name is Edward R. A. Smith and I'm joining from Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa.
    2. Currently, I'm collaborating with two of my colleagues to setup a consultancy firm that will provide services in Accounting, project and supply Chain management, and tax service as well as advisory services on government relations.
    3. The goal is to develop new skills and apply same to enhance my ability to provide tangible (up-to-date) contribution to my organisation and make more informed decisions that will help improved client performance and society as a whole.
    4. Certainly, it's my interest in joining a team as I'm convinced that i'll learn from the experiences that would be shared.
    5. Yes i do have some practical experiences. I served as the Deputy Head of the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (Liberia's EITI project).
As Deputy, I worked with the head of Secretariat to plan and design the LEITI Secretariat's work program (costed Workplan) and implement same. I learned that sometimes, it's important to review the project plan and make adjustment when financial, capacity, and other conditions are not aligned with the project time line due to internal or external factors instead of insisting on the original plan just to meet deadline or deliver a project that does not reflect ethical standards. Also, the integrity, transparency , and accountability are values that help ensure a project is successful and closed effectively. Project managers should be cognisant that a project is a representation of the (1) the manager and (2) the organisation.

A project is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources.

And a project is unique in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal. So a project team often includes people who don’t usually work together – sometimes from different organizations and across multiple geographies.

The development of software for an improved business process, the construction of a building or bridge, the relief effort after a natural disaster, the expansion of sales into a new geographic market — all are projects.

And all must be expertly managed to deliver the on-time, on-budget results, learning and integration that organizations need.

Project management, then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.

It has always been practiced informally, but began to emerge as a distinct profession in the mid-20th century. PMI’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) identifies its recurring elements:

Project management processes fall into five groups:
    Initiating
    Planning
    Executing
    Monitoring and Controlling
    Closing

Project management knowledge draws on ten areas:

    1. Integration
    2. Scope
    3. Time
    4. Cost
    5. Quality
    6. Procurement
      Human resources
      Communications
      Risk management
      Stakeholder management
