  • What is Girl Centered Design?

Girl-Centred Design is an approach that provides skills, knowledge and tools for practitioners to place adolescent girls at the Centre of program design and implementation. Getting adolescent girls and young women involved throughout program life cycles can improve their sense of agency and voice and program outcomes. Too often, girls are not consulted in implementing programs that were designed to benefit them. This results in unsustainable or ineffective program models. By finding the most marginalised girls, listening to their voices and seeing things from their perspective, practitioners are able to design impactful programs and services that can benefit the girls.

    Reflection questions

    1. What examples of girl centred design have you seen in action in your community or region?
    2. What differences have you seen in programmes that have employed the girl centred design approach?
    3. Do you know of useful resources for girl-centred organisations on the topic of Girl Centred Design that you can share? (this could be toolkits, short video clips, reports, etc)
    4. Do you have any questions or advice on the topic of Girl Centred Design?

There are a number of useful resources on Girl Centred Design that organisations can use to design innovative and impactful programmes, projects or interventions for the girls that they work with. Some of these resources are in the form of reports, researches, toolkits, etc. One great resource that GirlSPARKS uses during trainings is Girl-Centered Program Design: A Toolkit to Develop, Strengthen and Expand Adolescent Girls Programs, published in 2010 by Population Council. Each chapter of this toolkit contains an introduction to the topic, examples from existing programs for girls, and practical, user-friendly tools.

    Hi everyone

I wanted to share a blog by GirlSPARKS on why it's important to prioritise girls and a Girl-Centred Design approach: https://philanthropyu.org/girlsparks/
I'd love to hear your thoughts/comments on iy

  • I think the Girl Centred Design is more compared to meaningful involvement of the target audience where organisations try to involve girls into their programs. But from my observations there are gaps in this model especially when finding the girls that need the services most and many times girls are involved at the levels of tokenism.
