  • Do we need a girl centred design approach to safeguarding?

Safeguarding means ensuring that the programmes and activities we run do no harm - sometimes it is easy to unintentionally do harm despite the intentions of your programs being good. Ensuring that we have appropriate safeguarding mechanisms in place, including regular training for staff, is essential to so much of our work with girls and young women. However many organisations have limited time and capacity to ensure that these are in place, despite it being a legal requirement in many countries of the world. Additionally a lot of safeguarding guidance is gender neutral - but there may be times when we need to apply a gendered approach.

In this discussion please reflect on:

    • What challenges does your organisation face with ensuring safeguarding?

    • Should safeguarding be gendered? Why/why not?

    • What advice do you have for other organisations thinking about their own safeguarding policies and practices?

    • What resources are available to support organisations with safeguarding policies and practices? (if possible, please attach)
