  • @unia Would you be able to share here some more about your organization's model of engaging small holder farmers as producers in its core business model?

  • Diakch Company is a social enterprise working with small holder farmers to improve nutrition and income to have a sustainable rural livelihood projects through poultry(chicken) and livestock (goats).

    Business module:
    Diakch Company provide training to small holder farmers in modern rearing methods . The small holder farmers who have successful completed the training which include practical assignment to construct a shelter which can accommodate both the goats and chicken using cheap available materials in the community.

    The trained small holder farmers are given one month(layers) and ( broilers) plus feeds, those with indigenous goats are given the opportunity to cross breed with the exotic bred goat at Diakch demonstration farm at a fee, which is done by selection to have fittest and healthiest animals that will earn the highest price possible in the market.

    The farmers rear the chicken given to them for three to four months and are provided with veterinary services on the regularly basis. After that period the chicken start laying, the goats mature at four months for meat and for dairy goats conceive at four months.

    Diakch company buys from small holder farmers 90% of the products produced for example if one farmer produces 30 eggs a day,will buy 27 and leave 3, for milk if a goat produces 2 litres, will buy 1.55 litres and leave 0.45 litres, for broilers if the farmer produces 20, we buy 18 and leave 2, if the farmer sells a goat weighing 50kg we buy 45 kg and leave 5 kg for the farmer's family own consumption respectively.

    How does Diakch company make profit;

    It buys from small holder farmers at price, it will enable the company to recover it is production cost and at the same time both the farmers Diakch Company make profits.
