What are the most significant local human and civil rights challenges in the communities you serve, and how do you support community members to address them?
The promotion and protection of human and civil rights in South Sudan is mainly affected by two factors; lack of awareness and impunuty. The recurring civil and ethnic conflicts in S.Sudan has left most South Sudanese ignorant of the principles and instruments of human rights. Communities have no access to human rights information. Most of the communities members are illiterate and are rigid to traditional values and beliefs. The second problem concern impunity. With the fact that most government senior officers are absorbed from the Military, human abd civil rights issues seems foriegn and useless. This is not due to ignorance or illiteracy because these senior public servants in one way or another has acquired some level of education either before the war or after and have traveled to many countries with good governance but have ignored the concept just because the government has poor human rights record and they believe accountability is just impossible for them. As a result, we are faced with multiple problems as human rights defenders. However, what we have embarked on is awareness, advocacy, reporting and training. But still success seems dim as the current human rights situation is worsening though the concept is spreading speedily in the communities but violated by the suppose to be defenders, government. Thanks
